replacing the headset oin the missussses bike, an old spesh hardrock, that's had the existing cups in since new (8yrs - jaysus) and by jimminy they dont want to give up. Anyone got any bright ideas about what to use as a drift (don't say a drift, I haven't got one) or techniques to deploy, please? The screwdriver option is proving ineffective and I'm getting wary of how much more welly I want to give it.

Cheers, ta.

Got any old handlebars? They are pretty good as a drift for knocking old cups out, rounded edge fits a bit better and lets you hit it harder.

Worth buying the proper tool for £15? One of these

I've tried using screwdrivers and drifts before now and with lots and lots of swearing. The proper tool and it should come out in a couple of sharp taps.

Or will a local bike shop not remove it for a fiver?

Well thank you all for your solid suggestions the 3/8ths extension proved the weapon of choice but not before id gouged the downtube with the vice and laterstripped out the star nut doing the race the lazy way and had to drill out the topcap. Eventually though persistent application of stupidity won out and grotbag's chariot is now safe to steer. Hussah!
