Having just ripped the sole & cleat off my second pair of bonty MTB shoes has anyone got any recommendations for toughenoughforsinglespeed (tm) shoes or seen any good deals about?

Not directly, but I'd recommend steering clear of Specialized BG Comps for that reason. I'm on my second pair, and they've started to creak and squeak.

However, they are good shoes until that happens.

I've never even heard of that, how did you manage it?

My spesh shoes have always lasted years before something fails on them.

Ripped off? - I would expect at least a broken ankle to go with it if that happened

My Sidis have lasted years - if that helps

Both times was accelerating up a fairly steep hill on the singlespeed - both times I ended up on my arse in the bushes ๐Ÿ™

I had the same issues with specialised so I'll try the Sidis, ta!
