I've got 2 KOM so far, but I uploaded the route after making it, rather than it being my own track, so they're invalid. Shame really, they'll be the only KOM I'll get.

Would you not then see exactly where they start riding. Ie home mostly

You can turn a privacy setting on so it masks where you start and end to other users viewing your profile.

Strava can annoy you, I felt that I had gone faster up one of the climbs near me but was one second off my PB. Was gutted.

Gotta say I like strava a lot - makes rides a little more interesting. Not wanting to be too negative but
- it doesn't always recognise segments for named trails which to me have pretty well defined entry and exit points. This could be a problem with the first person who defined the segment.
- in order to get faster times it does encourage riders to straight line certain trails thus contributing to extra erosion
- and a little more controversially - it easy to find new trails thus not keeping them secret and also letting the landowners no.

As I said - it's great - I use it - just gotta switch it off at the right mo and remember to go round corners ๐Ÿ™‚

That's exactly what it is, it doesn't mark every trail out there itself!

The duplication is a little daft. There's 5 different 'Radnor Road' segments, which are identical routes from Peaslake to the reservoir, with end points differing by about 10 feet! I'm not that fussed, I'm KOM on all 5 ๐Ÿ™‚

I here what you say njee20.

But I did Northern Monkey yesterday. Great blast down but not recognised. Also have issues with 3 Amigos pt 1. Sometimes it recognises it sometimes it doesn't. I've considered defining the segment again but this gives duplication which as you say is occasionally daft.

Don't get me wrong I like the app a lot.....

As I always start my rides from home I've always been wary of making my rides public on Garmin Connect or Strava. I don't think its wise to advertise where all my bikes live. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
On Strava it appears that I can't be KOM unless I make the ride Public though ๐Ÿ˜•

You can mask the area around a certain post code, so it won't show up.

i think some of the variances and duplications with segments is due to different hardware recording the route, i.e garmin, htc, iphone etc.
garmin devices are pretty accurate but my phone does some odd stuff sometimes and misplaces the route by x meters and also power and elevations are also wildly different. I stick to the garmin and upload from that.

Loads of new segments have appeared round my way since I last checked a few weeks ago... definitely getting more popular!

That was me, 55 minutes i think Sorry!!!!!!

Think it was my first strava mtb ride i downloaded from my garmin and got something stupid like 12 out of 14 KOM, on a day when although i wasn't going slow i wasn't giving it full beans either. Plenty more segments will be added in next few years so be interesting to see how quick we can all go

Haha great stuff, well impressed with your time - fast on the way back down as well. I was suffering from a skipping chain stopping me putting a lot of power down but would still have been nowhere near. I had the KOM on the XC climb for the last couple of months but knew it was only a matter of time before I was knocked off. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ bugger me you put some miles in though.

Damn this thread, downloaded the app last night.

Just done a local blast without thinking there would be a segment on the best downhill section, would have pushed a bit harder. Oh well, I only beat the best time by 40 seconds on a 0.6 mile techy downhill segment. Boooooom, I love this app. ( I think my mrs will get tired of calling me KOM very quickly ๐Ÿ™‚ )

it ruins club/group rides on the road, there you are rolling along at a nice 18mph and boom! the pace jumps massively because somebody wants a PB on a section. and instead of staying reasonably close on climbs there's always somebody off the front wanting to be a hero.
it's obviously a good motivational tool for solo rides but if you want to race people you don't know then enter a race and do it in the real world not the internet.
it's measurebating for wannabe's

That's my (very limited) experience of club/group rides anyway (and that was long before Strava and GPS) ๐Ÿ˜•

Still clinging on to my one road KOM, by one second. I didn't used to think much about climbs, but Strava has changed that. Very interesting to see how you compare to serious roadies (easily spotted by profile pics with TT bikes and teardrop helmets and/or power ratings).

What does annoy me is that there are a couple of sections I've created in the woods that it doesn't pick up, and one I can't even find one on "Explore", but it does show up on my list of KOMs. Odd.

In settings - privacy you can set a radius around a postcode that is not shown, i.e exclude your home.

I think it's brilliant. It reinforces how slow I am and how much fitter I need to be. I have one KOM, shame I'm the only person to have ridden it.

8/9 on the stupid little climb up to my house? Now I know its a segment I'm going to hammer it! Its at the end of all my rides so i tend to just cruise up, with first place getting it in 2:05 I reckon thats easy beat for 1km stretch of 35m climb! Finally! I can justify the KOM jersey that I wear!

I've had Strava on the phone for a while but not used it yet. Am I right in thinking that it's like Endomondo but if you do a segment then it will automatically compare you with others? How does it recognise segments? Do people have to set them up manually or what?

Someone has to set the segments up we've ended up with some stupid names on the Quantocks, what the locals call Lady's Edge is called the A39 Climb (it's nowhere near the A39) ๐Ÿ™„
I put my postcode in (complete with space) and it worked for me.

I live in Lancashire and even I know it as Lady's Edge. We have the same problem around here. Someone has called the Ice Cream Run at Rivington the Broken Road Descent. Clueless!

Postcode now working...well it saved this time. If I'm viewing my ride it still shows my postcode, is this because it is me and not someone else?

I set mine up to block my postcode... It worked for one ride and hasn't ever since. Anyone had a similar problem or knows how to fix it?

Strava creates climbs and names them automatically as well based on certain criteria (e.g. elevation difference)

If you want you can go and make and name the segment yourself - if it's similar to an existing segment it asks if you want to use that one or create your own.

I think Strava is fantastic! Really great motivaion tool, and so much fun "racing" segments.

First thing I did when I got home was look over my ride ans add a few new segments where I remembered it being good.

Agree it's annoying at just how fast people are too ๐Ÿ˜†

Assume most are in the STW group:

Been busy uploading, great tool, seriously garmin connect should nick some of stravas ideas.....

Found out that on a lot of trail centre descents I'm faster on my mmmbop than on my nomad, not by much, but considering one is a hardtail and the other is a 6" full susser I take to the alps a bit of an eye opener!

Garmin are always a year or 2 behind the curve.

...either that or they will buy out a good idea and then wreck it.

I don't think anyones mentioned how cool it is for looking at pros rides. Check this on, Taylor Phinneys MSR.

Quite depressing how slow/weak in comparison! Just awesome stats.

I think I may have to re-register as a girl....that way I will only be getting beaten by a slightly less embarrassing margin.

Hardly anyone uses Strava here so I'm pretty much guaranteed KoM on segments. In some respects it's good but in others it means there's no idea whether the time is good or not.

that's the best way atlaz!

now that the popularity of it is increasing it's getting a whole lot harder to keep up the top of the hit parade round here.

I've noticed that round here the segments are pretty predictable - just the climbs from bottom to top. I'm starting to add some more interesting ones other than another 2 min climb.

Rode a whole bunch in Tenerife a few weeks ago, wow talk about long and steep, like nothing I've done before!

700 meters gain, over 10KM, at an average of 7%, fun!
