Actually, these are bmx wheels because I ride that too. But being as everyone is so knowlegable and nice here, I thought I'd ask here first If anyone know what it is.
Wheels are one week old, on a complete. You couldn't hear the noise riding along, but on the rack I heard it spining the front wheel, then in the back. It sounds like a tiny bearing rolling round the rim. You can hear it when you shake the wheel too. I say in the rim, but I guess it could be from the hub
What is it? Swarf in the rim? Loose bearing? Something to do with the spokes and loose nipples?
I've contacted the supplier and will run them over my LBS when I get the time. But I want to know what the hell it is.
A lost nipple rolling around in the rim in the box section is my guess try to shake it around to the valve hole
mavic welded rims do this. The thing making noise is an insert/plug at the seam of the rim where its pinned then welded. The plug loosens and tik-tak's back and forth.
could be something similar with your rims..
i asked around about fixes for this and got 2 solutions
#1 - silicon sealant/glue the loose piece so it can't move
#2 - (may only work for Mavic rims) if you look in the rim bed (inside) you will see two dimples or indents (one on eithers side of the weld) that are pressed/punched in the rim bed to......hold that plug in place and keep the rim all aligned pre-weld. well, If you simply take a sharp punch, and deepen the dimple that is already there...the noise will go away.
+1 for a loose nipple, then try the more diagnostic stuff ๐
I've got four dimples, two on each side of the weld. Should I punch each one? Bit scared. Don't want to damage the rim.
reckon that might be it though. Nothing coming out the valve hole
Oh, Did I say it's in both wheels? Front and back. So that would be two loose nipples on one bike. Could happen of course, but bit of a coincidence.
What if I just leave it? Is it going to do any damage?
try looking inside the rim at by the weld with a torch first (you can usually see the loose bit in a mavic rim move).. then just go the glue/silicone route if you're not confident punching it.
