[#1891660]

Thanks to all who posted earlier in the week regarding my stolen Yeti.

It was stolen from my house a few months ago and finally turned up on eBay this week.

The police were really helpful and without going into the detail managed to recover my bike today. I know we hear a lot on here how the police don't seem to take bike theft seriously, it certainly hasn't been the case with my theft.

For all of you who have been unlucky enough to have your pride and joy pinched, it really is worth setting up a couple of eBay searches for the name of your bike within a certain radius.

Just wanted to share my good news! :O)

Great stuff. Shouldn't e-bay have pulled the auction by now?

Looks like the toe-rag has history from his sales

I'm glad you got your bike back and the police where helpful but a quick look on his feedback shows he has made thousands in stolen bikes.

Are the police going to recover this money? Are they hell. He'll be selling stolen bikes in a couple of weeks under another name thats why i applaud ruff justice.

It's literally only just been recovered. eBay auction was left alone so as not to arise suspicion..

win the auction, leave a negative saying item being sold was stolen

Quite obviously an uneducated little oik judging by his spelling. I know I'm not exactly the last word in spelling and grammar, but 'corbon' and 'hydrolic'.
Glad to hear you've got it back and I hope the little sh1t gets what he deserves.

Is it legal yet to pull the toenails off bike thieves?

Jesus - look at all the bikes and parts he's sold. I imagine an awful lot of people are without their bikes because of this little sh1t. Well done on tracking your bike and him down.

Are the police likely to recover stolen goods he has shifted, seeing as they have records of who it was sold to? There's a Marin in his history sold for £750... Buyer must be gutted if he had no idea it was stolen and then it gets confiscated. Do paypal/ebay provide any help in these situations? Obviously I would want the original owner to get it back, especially if it wasn't insured.

Nice work in getting your bike back, and hope this little bugger gets what is coming to him.

he's cunning funt and should be hung up by his scrotum and left to bleed to death. Even if he goes to jail we pay for his entertainment/punishment/rehab/drugs.
Makes my blood boil

Well done to the police for pursuing this

name and shame him....

Ben...... fantastic news!

Now fellow STWers, what are we going to do about the thieving little scrote?
(or what can we do)?

And what of the nice "ebayers" that have purchased stolen goods?

We have the collective ability to bring a hacking website to it's knees so i'm sure we are all capable of some form of input.

suggestions please..........

It must be a good day for it...
ANOTHER bike recovered today!!

As a result of this thread I did a quick ebay search for my mates Giant Reign which was stolen from his inside his friends house last month.. the first result was the frame..

I let the guy know.. he informed the old bill and they were round there recovering the frame this afternoon.. they're going back with a warrant to search the property.. hopefully more stuff will be recovered when this happens..

The ad was very cleverly worded.. spelt correctly and told some story about wanting to build the frame up (listing some bling)but having to abandon the project..

In all the seller was very knowledgable about bikes.. had concocted an intricate and detailed cover story and was believable and literate.

sounding a bit naive here, but from the posts above it sounds like the guy won't get prosecuted? Is this correct? Does he just deny knowing it was stolen?

What gets my goat is the people who keep him in business- bidding on stuff that anyone with half a brain can see is stolen.

There are mountain bikers out there that care for a 'bargain' more than where something comes from. Not so long ago there were a couple who posted (definitely not trolling) that if they dont someone else will and it might as well go to a good home.

Good on them... ****S.

Seems to be a good week for recovering bikes. A well known (in Sweden) suspension specialist had his Carver 69er stolen here a few days ago. While he was out at another LBS picking up work orders later the same day the thief came in looking for innertubes (the 69er curse). Bike was returned relatively peacefully, though I don't think the police were notified in the end.

Im pleased that through the efforts of people on here spotting the bike on ebay its led to an arrest, but be careful what you put on here as the same people selling stolen bikes on ebay are also users of this forum so be careful what you post.

What sort of punishment do bike thieves get? considering they are quite often nicking kit that is worth more than a cheap car should be at least some jail time?

in the event that you're not trolling...
apply a bit of common sense. The guy's selling a high end frame, but doesn't specify anything other than the brand name?
Check out his other auctions, a mix of bike sizes and types, no attempt to 'sell' them..

At the risk of getting accused of being a troll again, by the hard of thinking...

I personally know one guy who legitimately buys secondhand bikes, not stolen afaia, from trusted sources like LBS trade ins, breaks them and makes a living on selling bits.

So i ask you the same question again.

Excellent news.

Without wanting to start a bout of mob justice. I wonder if I were to forward this thread to people that have sold him stuff if they would be prepared to divulge the address it was sent to....(making assumptions that was posted to where he lives of course)

I know someone that got ripped off on ebay for concert tickets, within a couple of emails and a couple of hours they managed to get the money back off him whilst stood on his doorstep.

Doesnt take much thought to outsmart some of these scrotes

OK, moron, here goes. If your mate makes a living at it then he buys kit he knows the value of, and to do that he needs to know what it is. When he's selling, he will describe the kit pretty accurately. He won't just put 'Yeti mountain bike'. In the same way a car dealer won't put 'Ford motor car'.

So i ask you the same question again.

I guess there has to be some common sense no?

yeti mountain bike, good condition, 27 speed, 26inch wheels, fox rear shocker, rockshox reba front suspention forks with hard and soft switch on handle bars, xtr shimano wheels and xtr shimano hydrolic disc breaks, xtr rapid fire gears shifters, xtr derailors, xtr crank set, aliminium peddles an corbon fiber seat post.

Is quite an interesting description,no?

Is your friend so eloquent in his descriptions or does he put an accurate ad together?
Does you friend sell his stuff or rely on people buying it becasue it's dirt cheap?

Congrats on getting your bike back. 😀

Not descending in to an argument with someone unwilling to at least try and think laterally....

But to judge someone a thief solely on their spelling and grammar?

A thought experiment. You have or know friends with teenage kids at school? Go on their facebook or other social network sites they frequent.
I swear down, my daughter and her friends are almost undecipherable. All are set 1 English in school btw.

They are conversing and trying to out cool each other not sell something for maximum profit or exposure 😆

FFS Its not cool for kids to converse with correct punctuation, prose and gravitas. 😉

Problem with this sort of crime, is proving someone stole/knew the bikes were stolen. Very often, in cases like this, the seller won't face any criminal charges at all. All they have to do is say they bought it in good faith, and without any proof, the worts that happens is that they lose the bike. Plenty of people have lost out like this; a mate lost out like this after buying what he thought was a legit bike off a neighbour. The neighbour denied all knowledge of course, when police came knocking. No receipt, mate's word against his. Mate lost his money, but didn't get charged with anything. Lesson learned; check provenance first. Caveat Emptor.

I've no doubt loads of parts are shifted via Ebay etc, but as stated, how can you tell? You might even buy something off a regular off here, someone you imagine to be trustworthy. I mean, there are loads of folk on here who have a large turnover of gear (not suggesting for a moment there's anything dodgy), but you just can't tell. As long as you believe it to be kosher, then that's all you can do.

Sadly, as cycling has become more popular, so has the trade in stolen bikes and bits. And it's 100% certain, I'd say, that this very forum, and all the others, are used by organised bike thieves to fence stuff. Think about theft of bikes from trail centres etc; opportunists don't visit these places, so how would yer average inner city scrote know to drive out to them to nick stuff? And stuff getting nicked from people's garages? People getting followed home from rides? Sorry, but the reality is that some people will take advantage of a situation for their own ends, without much thought for those they steal from.

It's not just scrotey chavs what do crime. Plenty of 'respectable' types will have you over soon as look at you. The best criminals are people you'd never suspect as being a criminal. Think about it.

Not a question of lateral thinking or playing devil's advocate, simple common sense. There are plenty of people who have poor grammar and have nice bikes and know how to describe their bike. Poor description of said bike, "hard soft switch", that's not poor grammar that points at something else.

That is not lateral thinking and trying to defend it is not using your common sense either, it's is closer to trolling and not particularly good trolling either. 😉
