My bike fell over last weekend and landed directly on the handlebar. The impact bent the end of the brake lever right back, i have since repaired the lever but now my steering is all over the place. I have had a look at the steerer etc and all seems ok. Could this be down to a bent stem....it's doing my head in. Please help
Headset ?
I was expecting a tale of how you crashed after a trip to the pub.
Possibly, it's really difficult to say. There seemed to be quite alot of friction in whole unit when steering. I really hope it's not the steerer.
Helpful...but no pub.

Best stem from falling over?? How tall is your bike and how heavy? Did the impact register on the richter scale?
Headset in good condition? was everything done up tight?
If not you may have caused a ripple in the space time continuum and that could end badly for all of us!
Bent your bars rather than the stem?
I would think it would be pretty difficult to bend a stem.
Excuse elitist mr Smith above. I think he finds it hard not to be a knob sometimes .
Its doubtful you have bent your stem. You may have knocked something on the headset meaning it’s not seated properly anymore. You may have a tight spot that’s making the steering feel weird. Have you checked the bars are still in line with the forks/wheel. Have you checked the bars aren’t bent?
there are loads of things to check. Best to start with symmetry. Does the left look the same as the right?
No worries about mr smith. Hopefully he won't be to disturbed by the ramifications.
You're right so much to check and dumbfound me. I reckon the headset could be worth further investigation.
Thank you

Yeah forgot the smiley as humour seemed a little obvious there....
It might seem obvious, but have you checked the bars/stem are still properly aligned?
It might just need a gentle nudge one way or 'tother...

Your headset bearings are gubbed.
It may seem obvious to you but the guy was asking a genuine question and has turned to stw for advice No need to ridicule him whether you meant it or not. Too much of that goes on on here by people like you. I think that sort of attitude has just become accepted as the norm.
I'd say take it all apart and check everything. Might be worth checking that your bars are still centred in the stem clamp too. I guess it's possible that if the clamp was a bit loose, with a direct hit, it could've shifted.
BTW were mikes comments really that offensive? Seemed lighthearted enough to me.

Calm down sugar, it was a genuine suggestion not a "put down"... Nobody else had actually asked if his bars were properly straight, if he's whacked them hard enough to bend a lever the stem Could easily have slipped a degree or two...
FFS the hot weather has turned some of you lot up to eleven hasn't it.
Apologies cookeaa. My reply wasn’t directed towards you.
