Just recently built and riding a hardtail for the first time, but don't notice the 'flex' everybody mentions.

Would this be because my rear axle is a 10mm bolt through from my full-suss bike; would it make that much difference?

Not sure how much flex to expect, is a 2011 Dialled PA...

You'll get more 'flex' from different tyre pressures...

You've come from a full suspension bike....no hardtail is going to feel flexy to you.

Would that be dependant upon more, or less, irony?

Try and blag a go on a racy Alu hardtail. It'll feel like it wants take off from between your legs when you start to pedal (compared to steel) but will have a go at rattling your fillings out on the rough stuff.

The difference is not as pronounced as it used to be, but it's still there.

The "flex" even on a flexy frame is minimal compared to how much a full sus frame moves underneath you.

The PA is a particularly stiff frame as steel frames go though, try a lightweight Columbus tubed race frame for a more noticeably flexy ride.

i think steel has more of a shock absorbing feel than out and out flex.

It's marginally less vibrating than Alu alloys, but not much. It's not a soft-tail by any stretch. I can crash through stuff I'd dawdle through on the alu hardtail, but I'd float through on the FS.
