Mate of mine keeps snapping spokes/nipples on his kinesis wheels. He's light and careful too.

Candodavid, not even a remote possibility of getting a test ride.

I'm in Northern Ireland

Kinesis wheels - as a package, they are well built, allegedly being built by the same place that does Reynolds wheels. They're stiffer than you would think from the weight and reasonably strong. They are made of much harder ally than stans. The rim joints are sleeve bonded and I had the front fold under me for no good reason. On inspection, it hadn't been glued properly and it was warrantied for me. They're stated as tubeless ready rims, but they're not the easiest, and are certainly harder to tubeless than stans or the light bike rims I have on the other bike.

My rear hub has been a total pain after the first 6 months of use. I've stripped a free hub and destroyed a set of pawls by breaking the tops off the teeth of both parts. Pawls are not readily available either.

I've very recently picked up a rear hub to build into the back wheel from the classified, since I'm not prepared to throw good money after bad.

Ultimately I've decided to retire them as emergency spares and replace them with light bike carbons on DT Swiss.

I'd buy a set of hope hoops with stans arches if I was buying a wheel package again.

Think I'll pair my hope hubs to a set of flow ex rims on hearing that, cheers.

Complete hijack here... for Quarterhorse owners.... just sorting out bits for mine after ordering. Would like to use the new raceface turbine cranks and planned to use the Hope PF46 bottom bracket....do you know what width the shell is as you seem to have to stipulate when you order the BB. Ta

Edit I have asked Marc at 2Souls but I think he is busy with his other job so hasn't replied and don't want to hassle the guy as he has been very helpful so far.

Hi Steve,

The guys at 2Souls fitted one of these for me:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/shimano-bb71-mtb-press-fit-bottom-bracket/rp-prod61801

It is compatible with 89.5mm & 92mm shell widths.

So, I'm assuming the Hope bb is the same?

Alan.

Well, if we're posting pictures of our steel hardtail 29ers I'll just leave these two here 🙂 Same location, different times of year:

Well if we are going with recommending what we have then here is another vote for the Solaris.

Confession time - I run mine @ 100mm.

Thanks Stu. That seems to somewhat limit things to Shimano as far as I can work out from the bottom bracket lists. No bad thing and saves me c.£150!

Sorry to butt in but:
Letmetalktomark can you make a measure of the headtube on your Stanton.
I also note your 6'2".
What's your inside leg measurement?
I am after maybe the titanium Stanton Sherpa when available.
Just wondering whether the 21" is too big?
I am 6'2" with 34" inside leg.
Thanks ,
Max

The hope one fits a 92mm shell doesn't it?

Not according to the Hope fit chart unless I'm reading it incorrectly which is quite possible. If it's a 92mm she'll width then they only have a 24mm axle one.

My mistake. I though it was for a 24mm axle. 😳

@ max - I have the same inside leg as you. HT is 140mm. The 19" was too short in the TT for my gibbon arms! I run a70mm(?) stem and 760mm bar.

Candodavid that really is lovely, just wish my bandit would sell, getting impatient now. Might end up selling the complete bike at a knockdown price

First 29er build so please recommend me some tyres please. Mainly trail centre use and some mostly damp natural singletrack.
I ran black chili compound tyres on my bandit, are they as good in 29er format or should I consider something else, they are going on stan's flow ex rims.

I've run Chunky Monkey on the front and Smorgasbord on the back all winter and they've been great on my Gyro. I plan to leave them on all year. Bargain price too.

2.2

Would be a nice profile on a Flow EX....

Flow EX + too wide a 29er tyre is a lot of weight to be turning: talking from experience.....
