What's the best way to support your forks when doing this? I noticed the plastic brace that stops the forks getting damaged in transit is extra deep and was thinking of leaving this inplace and supporting it and the forks on a block of wood before using the hammer

support the bottom of the steerer tube on a block of wood or in a work stand

Or holding it is also fine, as long as you are using a star nut setter that has the shroud around it.
