Tried a 29er Cotic Solaris with 650B plus wheels today . Initially I thought marketing bull but I'm not sure what's going on , I don't get why it rode like it did ? It had 2.8 WTB trailblazers , so my question is how wide can I go on a Crest rim ? Would they take a 2.4 ? Thinking of just on the back for a bit more cushioning .

2.4 on a Crest would surely be fine - it's hardly going to give you the same experience though.
Depends on the tyre. A 2.4 Conti Trail King will probably be terrible on an old Crest (they were 21mm I think, the 2016 are like 24mm).
A 2.4 Der Baron would be fine.
As above though, they're not gonna feel like a plus bike tyre.
