Just back from Pyrenees which was fantastic. But had ongoing problems with cranks/bb since I bought it. Few times the chain has been bounced off granny ring into the gap between bearing and granny ring which is a nightmare to get out.
Also bashed the cranks out there (totalled the big ring) and had a bunch of pedal strikes. No obvious play in BB (when checking by pushing/pulling cranks) but cranks did seem to keep coming loose (yes I torqued them up properly - XT ones - yep did pre-load adjuster up).
Anyway took it to bits today and now the Drive Side BB (external hope BB) goes in about 1/4 of the way without biting. Other BBs used for testing aren't as bad but they're still not biting until at least the second revolution.
Threads look fine, first one might not be perfect, but no obvious swarf or anything came out with the BB! Final point was when I first built this, I needed the bike shop to chase out the threads as they were too fine to get the BB in. BB itself (driveside where the problem is) seem okay, bit of play in it but not destroyed.
So (sorry for long post, knackered->rambling).
a) Cranks have been working lose and sawed away at the threads
b) dislodging chain from between chainset and frame has pushed BB out and damaged threads
c) Something else or combination of both....
Anyway, going to give Orange a call tomorrow when I'm more awake, but does anyone have any experience of a way to fix this (new sleeve, helicoil?) or am I in new frame territory?
