[#2015320]

Want a commuter/winter road/off road bike. Can't afford much so was thinking ss cx. I'm probably not fit enough for it but i guess i can go slow or push/carry.

Second hand i guess or something new and cheap. Anyone use a pompino for cx duties?

Photos please (and a garage to hide it in so the misses doesn't know about it).

Am thinking about converting this to CX duties (with a freewheel):

Why SS? I am sure you can sort out some gears on the cheap. You only need 1 STi. I really don't get SS cross bikes.

Me?

because it's 120mm OLD, so gears would be friction (bar end or down tube) and only up to six speed.

fontmoss - 16t will be too small to run with a 44 ring. I'm looking for 18t. Cheers anyway.

Bloody hell, those ^ are some of the nicest bikes I've ever seen.

I've just started out with one of these:

But too injured to ride it yet. Are cantis definitely the way to go for clearance? Just pissing about on the pavement and I noticed the brakes rubbing a little if I cornered.

"Why SS?" Has this comment not been added to the swear filter yet? 😀

Though it now has steel forks on - was never happy with carbon forks off-road - irrational I know!

Here's mine, taken last night when I tried to post it, though comp. wasn't playing ball and I didn't have the patience to sort!

It's in commuter mode, with slickish tyres and guards. Two punctures on the way to work this am (2 miles!) and neither were through the carcass.... grrrr.

Will do a couple of local cross races in November... and prob the Todmorden one in the new year if it goes ahead.

Well, it actually says "All being well production frames will be ready for autumn 2010". Unfortunately, all has not been well... Due to delays with production of Swifts and Peregrines, Kites got pushed back. As there's not much point launching a 'cross bike in February, we're now looking at autumn 2011 I'm afraid. I'll update the site.

I'm building one myself this winter, not for racing I'll be keeping the Pearson for that.
I have a choice of some old steel 531 frames that would have run 27x11/4" wheels. They had shed loads of clearance anyway, but with 700cs there's even more.
The canti bosses are coming from Ceeway, but I'm waiting to see which frame I decide on so I get the right ones.
The good thing is that old frames had long semi horizontal drop outs, so can be converted to singlespeed without any mods.

You won't have the raised bottom bracket, but that's not a major issue.
Add thirty quid for a powder coat, and for well under a ton you've got a funky singlespeed crosser.
crosser-singlespeed-niche-retro-all-in-one

Edit; as the older frames were 120mm you can directly fit track or flip flop hubs as well.

One I'm working on now. Though this is for geared winter road use.
The pump pegs and lamp bracket have gone, but the guard eyes are staying.
This is a nice 1969 Claud Butler.

Edit; This one was £50 but included a nice rare single Stonglight 49D chainset with 46t ring and GB bars and stem
