Bent me mech hanger going over a stile yesterday - just phoned Halfrauds who haven't got any, but who would want £25 for one if they did. I was going to buy a couple, but not at that price.... It's for a Boardman Pro hardtail if it matters.

Does anyone know if there's someone producing el-cheapo alternatives - I want to cry when I think of spending that kind of cash.

Or is it advisable to bend it back into shape with a vice / mole grips?

Try bending it back, I always do, sometime it works other times they snap but get a spare either way. I tend to re-fit the 'fixed' one and keep the other with me when riding.

BETD make lots of spare mech hangers, not sure if there making any for Boardmans yet though & check flea-bay...

[edit:] yes they do & only £16 (plus an P&P) -

Think yourself lucky that you can get one at all, my m8 had to wait for 5 months before Stiff/Jungle had an order big enough that they bothered to get him a spare for his Heckler
(they wouldn't order from the US until they had an order big enough to make it worthwhile for them).

Cheers for that z1ppy - unfortunately I'm an impatient b*gger and have just placed an order for two spares at derailleurhanger.com in the US - prolly means a two week wait 🙁

BETD do have the mech I need as well - it's only a few quid more than the American company after postage. Bah!

Off to play with my vice.....

The boardmans use one of the fairly common dropouts, so it shoud be easy enough to find one. But yeah, dropout prices are a hilarious p*sstake, as is the demented lack of standardisation. Ho hum.

****t, ****t ****t. Tried straightening the old hanger out with the vice and molegrips. The grips slipped and I've boggered its threads (but hopefully not the threads on the X0 (not X9 as previously stated!)).

So, likely to be without the good bike for a few weeks - time to get retro on the rigid Kona 🙂

Er, please don't say you've been trying to straighten it with the mech still screwed in. 😯

Er no. I may be cabbage looking but I ain't green......

I just worried that I may have damaged the mech's threads by trying to screw it into the damaged thread on the hanger.

I got one of those park tools hanger straightener tools a year back, it has paid for itself twice already.

If the threads are good on the back of the hanger and you have no tap try putting a suitably sized (steel not xo ti/alu!) bolt through from the good side, might clear the threads.

Good tip about clearing the threads, cheers. Will give it a shot tomorrow. It's only the 2nd hanger I've ever bent in my life so I probably won't invest in a tool 🙂
