A couple of questions

Can I use any gear cable with either of these 2 systems?

Is it true that a SRAM shifter will be fine with a Shimano FRONT mech but not with a Shimano REAR mech?

Depends what the shifter is. If it is a named shifter like a Rocket then yes it will work with a Shimano rear mech. If however it is a X numbered shifter such as X7 then no it won't.
