Currently running x0 9spd, but will be changing to 10spd in the not so distant future.
I'm likely to be replacing the 9spd with 10spd XO. But out of curiousity, would a short cage Sram Red mech work with an XO/XX shifter?

Yes, but only if you're running a close ratio block (28t or less), in which case there's no point going 10 speed.
