Is there any reason I shouldn't use one of these 'road' chains on a mountain bike?
Or is this a 'you will die'?
Should be fine, go for it. Road chains I have found cant be split and remade and you will need a chain link to join it, like normal sram chains.
PC 1051 is suitable for mtb or road. Asuming you are running 10 spd. Use the power link and ignor what they say about it not being reusable. I have split both my Power linked PC 1051's a few dozen times to clean them, and still on the same links that came with the chains. ๐

I was thinking that a few places seem to list it as a 'road' chain or a 'mtb' chain - sometimes with only one word difference - and some also refer to it as 'hollow pin' (AFAIK it isn't). The wonders of websites with cut and paste adverts of poorly understood spec sheets ... I've been avoiding it as a choice for a while.
My rather obvious attraction to this fine chain was a certain South Yorkshire cycle manufacturer offering a crazy deal on them.
I gave up on the black 'power locks' as I've never managed to split one of these (no link pliers which I understand makes this much easier) but I've played with the KMC 10spd links happily enough. I *have* been told that SRAM gold 9spd powerlinks will run happily on a 10 spd mtb chain through 10spd drivetrain. Not tried this...
