My Marin has developed the most annoying squeak. Its an 09 model, I think its crank related as seams consistent with pedaling. My dealer checked it out, greased the bearings anyway but said that it was loose rear drop out which they tightened and greased. Next time I went out the squeak returned. My dealer is a good hour round trip so I would rather sort it myself if I can. Any ideas where to look? I've never pulled a bottom bracket to bits before but it doesn't look that hard too do. Does anyone know if the XT external bearings are sealed?

Ally

Marins are prone to creaking because that boxy Al tends to amplify sound!
It could be the BB, not necessarily knacked, but might just need removing and then replacing. Also check rear QR, and seatpost. The noise travels well through that frame

Spoke to my local marin dealer yesterday. They think its the bottom bracket but apparently it probably won't be covered by the warranty. I think this is a bit harsh as the bike is only 6 months old. They did go a bit snooty as soon as they found out I didn't buy it from them.

spent months once trying to get rid of a squeak on my old 46, convinced it was the cranks as only when I pedalled. over a long period took apart most moving parts cleaned and greased, turned out to be the saddle rails needed greasing!!!!!!

Friend had probs like yours. Wasnt the bb in the end, but the rear dropouts. Took them off cleaned and a bit of grease on the contact surfaces and it stopped!

I snapped a mount vision in half once, really hurt my nuts when it broke. Started with a squeak and turned out to be a crack just above the bottom bracket - eventually the BB dropped off entirely. Not that you should worry mind!

judderman ... out of interest did you not notice that it didn't squeak when you were stood up out of the saddle , or did it squeak either way?

The rear dropout dowel nuts were a smidge too long on mine so the didnt quite pinch down right. When you tighten them down do the still spin? If so file them down...
