Hello there, a little advice please.

Having laced up existing hubs and spokes onto new rims (same ERD), I took them to a local and highly regarded MTB shop for final tensioning.

When I went to collect today I was told by the lad (the mechanic wasn't in) that there was "something wrong with the spokes" and that though the front wheel had been tensioned, it wouldn't true. I would need the spokes replacing.

Is this possible? I know older spokes may be more liable to break, but could it be that in some way they wouldn't tension the wheel?

Going to another well regarded though purely roadie shop in the week for a second opinion, but of course I wanted to know what STW thinks too.

Comments and advice much appreciated

Alex

If they threaded up OK and weren't too long/short then I am struggling to see an issue.

Could be that the lad didn't understand what he was told to tell you, of course.

It does sound odd - if the spokes can be tightened sufficiently then there's no reason they couldn't be tensioned - all I can think is that it's a flexy rim and the builder has overtensioned them which will make it hard or impossible to true.

Second opinion confirmed that there is nothing wrong (nor could there be) with the existing spokes.

I wonder if the Crests, which have a low max tension, were causing the problem?

Anyway, I borrowed a tensiometer and did it myself ๐Ÿ™‚

Now getting tyres on the buggers, that's another matter ๐Ÿ™
