29er hardtail, got a Butcher and a Slaughter waiting to put on. Giving it some thought bikes mostly used on tarmac and gravel with very occasional Singletrack ( I know waste of a good Ti HT 🙄) So I wondered about a Schwalbe G One for the front and the Slaughter out back and sell the Butcher.
Going into over thinking mode 🙄 I then thought why not try the Slaughter I've got on the front first and put the part worn High Roller on the back? At least compared to the G one the Slaughter has got some knobblies on the shoulders should I venture off road.
When it was properly dry, when was that? May? I had a Slaughter front and rear. Was fast and grippy enough on dusty trails. I swapped it out soon as the dampness came back, still got one on the rear, which I really like. My BigTop 29er has Good Year Peaks, which are even faster rolling/less grippy than Slaughters cos it only really gets used for stuff like you mention. Do it. It's fun 🙂
Dez B that's the thing, I've got 650B steel HT with meaty Minions for lairy dampness 😈😈😈😈😈
Yeah, I've got 650B carbon HT for that (with a Slaughter on the rear 😂 )
I used to use those Michelin semi-slicks (were called Jets, now something else) in the summer. And Larsens and Small Block Eights.. remember Panaracer MachSS? They started it all! I do like a fast tyre when it's dry. I need all the help I can get 😀

Unless it’s dry and firm you better have confidence in your cornering because straight line braking wont be the best. For what you are suggesting though I think the Slaughter sounds OK but only if you already have one and it saves you from buying something else.
Rubber Buccaneer I just got to thinking that the type of riding I do on that bike the Butcher I bought for the front would drag big time.
I say try it and see how it works

I’d stick the Slaughter on the back and the HR on the front but really why not try both and see what works? I think it’s easy to get bogged down in too much tyre when lighter weight and faster rolling can make riding more fun in many situations
I use my rigid MTB mainly on road and gravel and have slaughters front and rear. Nice and quick for that but wouldn't feel confident in them on anything more technical
