Specialized Stumpy:...

[Closed] Specialized Stumpy: Should I?

I'm in the process of looking for a new bike (since some little chav scrote stole my last one a while back) and, whilst cruising the world's favourite internet flea market, a Stumpy caught my eye.

Now, I've always liked the stumpy, but have never really been in a position to either afford one, or justify the expense to myself. But... This is second hand, looks to be in good nick and I have a bit of spare cash around this year (a rare event).

I know it's a loaded question, but has anyone had any bad experiences with a stumpy full sus? A guy at work has one and it's had a couple of issues with brakes and the suspension link, but he weighs about a stone more than me and abuses his over mountains at weekends, so maybe that's expected.

Cheers all.

What year and model is it?

Whatever they are all good as far as I know I had an 04 and an 05 FSR both good, my mates have an 06 & 07 both great too, and am sure newer will be nice too, if it needs new bearings (and they do from time to time) its not that expensive, kits availiable on your internet flea market.

Spesh have used lots of different brake, gear, shock, fork, manufacturers over the years you would have to know what your looking at, but all manufacturers do that.

I've had a carbon one since last summer (or rather, I've had the carbon frame and the rest is custom).

Excellent piece of kit and probably better than both my Enduros, though not entirely sure why. Feels more agile I think. Could do with a more aggressive set of forks but limited by the geometry.

As for reliability and maintenance, it's probably wise to check all suss bearings/links every few weeks just to be sure.

Get it and enjoy.

+1 for Spesh's warranty and all round customer care. For a start you get to speak with the experts (mechanics) themselves ... and you can visit them/drop stuff off for repair, etc, if in the area.

I've had my 2008 FSR Comp for 3 years now, it is still going strong. Annual service from a great local LBS has really helped. I am a fat bugger, but not doing huge drops (on purpose) or anything, but enough 2footers to flat to bottom out the suspension.

Only problem was me stripping the threads on the non-drive side crank arm. Doh! My fault though.

The ad says it's and '07 "Elite"...

Sorry to link to fleabay, but you know how it goes.

The only bad thing about the bike is that it's in Wales. I'm in Cambridgeshire, so it will be a 400 mile round trip for me (if I win it) to pick it up.

Brilliant allrounder, got a great kit list, see if he will post it though, box's are free from the LBS and postage will only cost £20. Or I guess you could take it straight to a weekends riding.

Would be nice to see some more close up pics if it was my money.... Or even better to find one you can go and veiw.

for inspiration..

I've got an 01 Stumpjumper & have just bought a new 2010 Stumpjumper Elite as well.
Really pleased with the old one & the new one. I have had a few niggles with the new one (brakes needed bleeding etc.) but nothing to put me off.

If you are gonna bid on that one from eBay, I'd want to see more pics of it to better gauge the condition.

Damn... Got some srious yearning now. The idea of taking it straight out for a weekend really appeals. Brecon's just around the corner from there (would have to come past it on the way home) and I saw some cracking trails the last time I was there.

Off to try and get more pics I think.

looks like a nice bike, seller seems good too. as other have said get some closer pics.

a lad i know has one and it seems to handle everything that the 'bigger' bikes handle no problem, it just climbs better! i'd give it a shot at the right price of course,

yup ask for some more pictures, as long as there isnt anything wrong with the shock/forks or the tubes of the frame itself then there isnt anything that cant be fixed for a few quid... As said they do need new bearings every now and then but its DIY able and reasonable cost, but a new shock shaft and service for the shock is £150 so you need close ups of the shock and the fork stanchions too... If there is wear on the shock shaft its usually at the top so will show in a pic.

If your in any doubt about anything your welcome to mail me the images, and I would do my best for you. 🙂

I run a stumpy expert 07 (the one with the brain) it is a superb bike with a super spec list fox talas forks and avid juicy 7's, i run it hope pro's carbon bar and seatpost and a lightweight controltech 70mm stem. This bike is awesome on the ups and even better on the decents, been to Wales and Scotland trail centres never missed a beat!! I have had no issues with the bike and have ridden Lapierre and Meta's this bike rocks and is more compliant on twisty singletrack than anything else I've ridden. DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN!!! BUY IT!!
