SPD cleats fouling flat pedals?

Seeking advice, please. I've got SPD's on my gravel bike and flat DMR V12 on my MTB. Depending on where I'm riding and conditions I sometimes swap them over.

I've 0nly got one pair of off-road shoes, which unsurprisingly are fitted with SPD cleats. Problem I find is that the cleats foul the V12's and I struggle to get decent grip. Are there any pedals out there where this wouldn't be a problem, where the pedal centre section is concave to give a bit of clearance?

Or just buy some trainers that I don't mind knackering? Or wear my Merrell Moabs?

Thanks all.

if you have shoes more suited to cageless spd's, they probably dont work very well on flat pedals regardless

id have 2 sets of shoes, or get a nice set of caged spds on the mtb

Honest answer

evanscycles pick up a pair of flat shoes for under £40 and not worry about it

Well, there's your problem.

If only there was a well known national retailer selling excellent quality flat pedal shoes with up to 70% discount.

Try looking here for some proper flat pedal shoes. Depending on size you might be in luck. Freerider EPS are great now it's a bit colder. I'm not such a fan of some of the more 'skate shoe' style models, too soft in the sole and not enough protection for proper offroad riding.

Spd shoes, even with the cleats removed will always be horrendous on flat pedals.

As per the last 3 posts! Riding flats with cleats on your soles is a very silly idea! Either get the shoes or spd pedals on both bikes - if you want a REALLY cheap solution, I've got some M520 pedals or some of the old plastic caged ones you can have for the price of postage 😀

Cleated shoes do not play well with flats. Even when fitted with a blanking plate instead of the cleat. Even a cheap set of skate shoes will be better. Moabs seem a waste and given the sole shape probably won't play very well either.

As above, Evans cycles, Freeride Pro mids for £48, spend the winter in warm-ish, water resistant flat pedal, grippy bliss.

I'm tempted to stock up for a few years at that price 🤣

Update, ended up buying some 5-10 Sleuth shoes from Evans, £23.00. Wore them for the first time at Haldon last week and they were excellent, hugely improved grip on the pedal. So, shoes and pedals are sorted, just need to improve everything else now. 🙂
