I've entered the 50k for this and it will be my first race!
I'll be aiming to complete it in about 3 hours which I think is achievable given my speed on longer rides and despite my lack of fitness.
As I doubt that I'll be troubling the podium and I'll be slower as I'm on a singlespeed what's the best strategy for the start? Hang back and let the fast guys get away and then carry on at my own pace?
Any other tips for a novice racer?
I would try and get in the top 10% of the field the SPAM challange has LOADS of absolute novices riding Tesco specials with wellies on. I imagine you will be a bit faster than them. Best tip is to keep drinking if your using a camelback your tube will freeze try and keep the fluid moving or blow it back into the bladder.
There's loads of road sections so you will be killed when the guys with gears catch up but they usually finish in a nice single track wood where peoples gears die and you will have an advantage.

I did this once, never again, as the clay mud type soil is a nightmare. The course is uninspiring, it turned into a boring slog*.

The gears will clog with mud snow and ice and stop working. By January the weather will be loads colder than now.
