[#4093942]

My 26" XTC is going tomorrow and I have a 29" itch that I need to scratch. Ideally, I'd like to build up my own bike and am torn between the Solaris and the FF29. I'd really appreciate any feedback on the two. Looking for a bit of comfort and speed on the flat stuff and climbs. Not really bothered about steep stuff.

Any help gratefuly received

Cheers

Simon

Dunno much about the FF29, but my Solaris is the nuts. Very comfortable, quick and confidence inspiring. Looks mighty fine in orange too.

You considered an On One Lurcher/Race or Niner EMD?

Only ask as the FF & Solaris seem very different (like 2-3 deg in HA).

Niner SIR.9 is very comfy, & if you don't need the EBB the MCR (Magic Carpet Ride) is a bit cheaper.
Still pricey though, but I love mine.
Was talking to Charliethebikemonger the other week & he was raving about the Canfield Nimble 9. Said its a lot like the SIR.9 but better on the down bits. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Nimble 9 is fab - very confident going down. Quite solid at the rear so ptob same spring as the steel Niners?

Get yourself a Solaris - Can't say how they ride, but going on mag reviews etc. they sound the nuts!

Im waiting on a green one - Which looks delicious! ๐Ÿ™‚ (roll on 1st wk in July!)

Cotic seem very switched on with the design of there frames and tweek them to perfection.

Solaris you say...

TBH if you're not really fussed about steep stuff this frame is prob not for you. Yes it is propper fast along the flats and climbs quite well (a little wandery - you have to show it who is boss!) but it really comes alive on the descents...

Not about being 'cool' - it is a fab frame - not regretted selling a 'boutique' FS frame for it in the slightest

Didn't know Cy was doing the Solaris in green. That's why I decided on the FF29 because of the sic green colour

Dawson -

No idea what happened there! - Can't even blame the wee man, he has been in bed since 7pm.

Shame the Solaris isn't available for those of us below 5'9" or so

My mate, bless him is only 5' 8" - he says ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hi Mike! ๐Ÿ™‚

He contacted Cotic about one too, but they reckon folk 5' 9" + would be the only ones to benifit from bigger wheels.

They're wrong. Apparently,

If Paul wanted a light, comfortable, efficient thing for crossing a map, then the 29er would be good. For having fun and generally enjoying riding bikes, you won't be that surprised to hear he's back on his Soul.
So, you can't be having fun or enjoy riding bikes if you ride "a light, comfortable, efficient thing for crossing a map".

That'll be news to me then.

100mm forks don't wander going up, and are still pretty confident on the downs.

No, the statement is about his preferred riding and what he finds fun, not everyone else. And Cotic are stating that they want their frames to suit riding in that style.

So is a Solaris on 4" forks a good option for fast and comfy without wandering on the climbs?

Yep. It's a better technical climber than anything else I've ridden.
