After a weekend away with the girls, my wife's wanting some protection - which given her track record is probably wise.
What's best for comfort etc?
Thanks
Depends on her size and what type of riding she does. The POC arms and quite good, VPD. it's the expensive "thixotropic" stuff, ie soft but on impact hardens. They look comfy and Mr MC wears them all the time now after rupturing his tricep this summer.
GForm are the other recomedation as they are a lot cheaper, but everyone raves about them. I haven't got them/seen/tested them but Mr MC is thinking of buying these in legs (at the minute he has some all mesh Dianese ones).
Race face do some ladies specific stuff. Knee pads that stretch quite far down the shin.
The 661 rhythms look comfy from the pictures, for winter at least.
POC... POC... POC... Or if you're lucky enough to have a LBS that stores bluegrass...
Woah, I'll be hiding the POC recommendation from her - £100!
She's worth it of course, but that would be £20 per ride....
RF ones on offer though. Ta
I use the 661 Veggie Knee pads, they're not hard shell, and feel quite unobtrusive.
Another vote for 661 veggies. You honestly forget you've got them on. Purely in the interests of research, I've fallen off repeatedly. They work!
Check the Classifieds too, there's some on there!
binners - I thought you were a riding god, or am I getting you mixed up with hora? 😉
Thanks folks. Not sure she'd go SH.....
I've been wearing the G-Forms. They're very comfy - like a lycra arm/knee warmer with some padding stuck on. Very flexible. Easily washed (there's a thread on this somewhere). Light weight.
The shock absorption is (for me) yet to be proven.
Do yours have the bright yellow puckered sphincter on them?
Not sure she'd go for that. Otherwise they look great.
Ta
The yellow is fine - especially under a jersey/trousers. They are very close fitting, so this is actually possible.
I believe the black ones are due in soon, but I happen to like the yellow!
Ta. Any contact I've had with The Bike Chain has been 100% good, so will bear them in mind.
If you've got an Evans nearby get to go down and try the pads on. Better to 'feel' right in them and with the right size plus Evans price match against any UK retailer (including online as long as they are in stock).
the troy lee kg 5400s are pretty lightweight - not as lightweight as the g-forms maybe
g-forms in black are available now, only reason I can see to use something else (soft) is if you don't want the lycra sleeves (meaning you have to take your shoes off to get them on) but most seem to have sleeves of some sort these days anyway. I have 661's evo's as well but they aren't as comfy and slip.
(Mr Munqe chick mentioned above)
POC elbows are comfy, but POC are very expensive and a bit needy and fragile; you have to wear them next to the body to keep them soft with heat, and they cant be washed with detergent. Mine came unstitched after 4 rides but POC and tweeks cycles sorted a replacement pair within 10 days of me emailing them. The G-forms sound much more low maintenance and I've only heard good things about them.
They are priced close to non-thixotropic stuff too and cheaper than POC or 661 even when on sale (I didnt pay RRP for my POC but I didnt pay 40 quid either 🙄
Does she ride often/hard enough to justify investing in something a bit more sophisticated (ie. thixotropic) or does she just want/need something with basic protection to add confidence like the 661 Veggies (no aspersions on Cinnamon-girls riding, I'm sure shes better than me and doesn't fall off as much hence being happy with veggies!). Having lost 3 months of this years riding (and working) and still having to rebuild upper body strength I am in the worth-the-investment camp ('course it would have helped if I'd worn my old Dainese pads on the fateful welsh ride that claimed my elbow and tricep. 🙄 )
661 Evo's. Soft, thin, stay in place and comfortable enough for 6-7 hour rides. Also really easy to wear under cycle clothing so won't be visible if that's an issue
