MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
The moulded plastic retaining sheet in my socket set box broke up a while ago and I'm increasingly annoyed with having the sockets loose in the box. I want to put a sheet of stiff foam (like that used in camera boxes etc) and cut it to take the sockets and ratchets.
It ain't worth buying all the foam drills required - does anyone know of a way to neatly form the recesses or of anywhere I could get this done. Or alternatively a source of replacement box liners (can't find anything on the net).
How about a magnetic sheet at the bottom of the box to hold them in place - not sure if this would be strong enough but it would save you faffing about cutting holes in foam etc.
edit; just checked on eBay for magnetic strip and there's loads
clip on socket rails?
bit of cloth, and some expanding foam.
Sorted.
I prefer to just throw them all in a drawer these days but hey .............
back when I used to care about those sort of things I used to make foam inserts for my toolbox
You need one sheet of normal foam - say 10mm - and glue to it a similar, 10mm sheet of high density foam
Try a model shop for the EVA foam
The high density stuff is the top layer and it's relatively easy to cut to a neat finish
The magnetic sheet sounds like a good idea. The throw in a drawer would appeal but makes it hard to carry them to events.
Thanks.
The thing is with sockets [and spanners] is that you only probably need 3 or so sizes - if any at all on most MTBs
I got a plastic grid thing - like a peg board - from Halfords, I think. It sits in my toolcase drawer quite nicely and organises all but the fattest (they're just flung in...) You can move the pegs around to fit all the different sized sockets, but uplink's right - you only usually need one or two sizes for the bike at most.
I do have one drawer with the foam cutouts - that holds a few select tools (BB spanner, shockpump and some other bits that I could be bothered to do) I used an old stanley blade and heated it up over the gas hob to cut it all out. Very laborious but probably just about worth it...
I use socket rails. You could rivet them to the bottom of the box.
