of why i lean towards a bit of niche. it's in my blood, as shown by this pic of my grandad and his mates in the 30's
big wheels
whacky bars
tweed etc, it's all there

all i need is some Oxford bags and some Brylcream and i'm all set

Cool pic! 8)

My Great Grandad owned a bike shop (have a photo but I need to get it scanned) - Mum was always able to take her pick of bikes to play on when she visited - imagine that, a different bike for every ride ๐Ÿ˜› . . . now I know where I got it from ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've a very similar picture of my grandad somewhere I think. I'll go through the contact sheets and see if I can find it. My great uncle Alec, my grandad's brother was still riding into his 70's until some useless waste of space knocked him of his bike and killed him.

rOcKeTdOg: I wish I knew more about it. My grandfather told me that he won quite a few races but that as many of the prizes were (oil) lamps they were thrown away when the house where electrified. The one one I know we still have is an Ice Bucket but it seems to have gone missing.

One day I'll get in touch with the Cycle Trace and see if I can find out more.

Thats awesome!
My Dad used to cycle from Bishop Auckland to Harrogate on a regular basis to see his cousin, on a SS Fixie. Probly while smoking Woodbines.

I was trying to work out what's going on with that chainring too.
Is it every other tooth removed to save weight or is it a 1" pitch chain ?

And what are the angles on that frame ?

I'd say it's the old 1" pitch by the looks, but what an excellent weight saving uber niche idea (rushes out to file off every other tooth on chainring)........

Skip-tooth . . . and angles like my old Tazer FS ๐Ÿ˜‰ . Cracking pic ๐Ÿ˜€

it's in your Genes too then Mama!

Certainly is RD. The unrestored house (still with its old shop front) stayed in the family until fairly recently when my maiden aunt's partner passed away. I was fully expecting to unearth some bicycle-related treasures during the house clearance but no such luck. Would have made a cracking little base for a bike hire business in the Usk valley.

Anyone else chucking at a vision of xckeith forgetting he spent ages getting that 33 tooth chainring, filing, skipping, filing, skipping, filing, skipping unti he gets back to a gap, only to have removed every tooth before a big sigh and a cup of tea?

Just me then ๐Ÿ™‚

according to my mam ,my great grandad used to be a competitive cyclist around the turn of the last century (1890's-1900's approx.) When we were little I can remember going to my grandad's and helping my mam clean a massive silver trophy, which apparently was a trophy my great grandad had won for cycling - my mam's not sure if it was national, county (yorkshire) or local (Leeds/Morley/Bradford).- sadly when my grandma (my mam's stepmother died) we think her family may have taken it or it was sold at some point.
I've tried on a number of occasions to try and find out more about my great grandad but I'm not having much luck (my mam can't remember which cycling club he was in) -if anyone hasany ideas of how/where to find any info I'd be very greatful.

Sadly all the pics of my Grandad are at my grandmother's in France but he was a pro roadie just before the war - raced and regularly beat the World Champion too. There are some brilliant pics and newspaper cuttings of him.

Unfortunately the war ended his cycling career particularly as he had to hide in a friend's cellar for three years having been in the resistance. Lack of food down there lead to him starting smoking which killed off the cycling and lead to his death at only 43. Wish I'd known him ๐Ÿ™
