2012

297 chainstay snapped at the weld. Imo dead! Anyone know of a solution or have a chainstay kicking around on a dead frame?

2012?

I think it’s time to retire that frame and get a new bike!

^^^ this if you can.

Presumably it's pre boost (unless very early boost)

No doubt many other out of date standards plus narrower back end Vs modern tyre widths (if my 2015 Spesh is any indicator).

Won't be a 297 (mullet) if it's a 2012.

The first mega model was 2013 I think? And the only model was 26”, so can’t be a 297…. Anyhow that first batch had a manufacturing defect where the chainstay snapped at the bridge (drive side if I remember correctly).

The defect was found fairly quickly and new rear chainstays were shipped out within a few months. It took me 10 years to break mine, but it gave up the ghost in 2022. Whoever bought the bike originally should have a replacement one somewhere…..

So, there might be some new-old stock out there somewhere… but in the meantime I have a fully pimped 26” mega in the garage I could probably do you, preferably as a whole bike though.

edit: I suppose stealth ad…. the bike is whole with the replacement chainstay fitted, XT gears and brakes, uppy/downy post, Marzocchi Bomber Rc3Ti forks, both coil and air shocks available and virtually unused chain stays 😊

There was/is a place up Darley Dale that would weld aluminium with excellent results, apologies that I can’t remember the name but if you ring Stanley Fearns they will know.

I had the round tubed alloy 26" model, bought as a frame only in 2012. It had the updated stay.

297 was 2013 I believe, maybe even 2014.

Thinking more on this, are you sure it's not a Mega 275? Got any pics?

The 2015 models were the 275 and 290. A 2014 stay might fit but they changed the frame design again in 2016.

Might be worth a look on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Pink Bike.
