I snapped my chain today out riding; first time ever. One of the outer plates seemed to have bent of the end of the pin; what would have caused that?
I was spinning up a steep hill at the time.

The KMC quick link was fine.

I did get hit off my bike a few weeks back & dropped the chain at the time but I can't see that that would have caused it.

No signs of wear. Clumsy shift perhaps? 3x10 by the way.

usually a small stone that gets rammed into the link by a tooth.

Well hopefully it won't happen again. I didn't have a spare quick link (my fault) and although I re-joined the chain with a pin it just pulled out (KMC warn against doing this- I think the ends of the pins are mushroomed, but I thought it might get me home).

I also managed to bend the chain tool in my multitool, I'll bet they're not available independently.

-- Edit --

Blimey, six quid for a missing link!! I guess I should be carrying one.
