Possibly esoteric one this.
Does anyone remember Shimano doing 7sp triples with a 38t big ring, about 20y ago? What was the rationale for this, and what size were the others?
It was microdrive. Designed to work with the 11t sprocket. I worked in a shop that sold Claud Bulters that still had freewheels so 13t and the 'new' chain set. My mate would sell them to people commuting and fit slicks. The punter would come back wondering why the would spin out only to find the chainset was riveted together meaning you couldn't change the rings. So new chainset or new back wheel! Not ideal on a sub £300 bike
Only on Altus of that era as far as I remember. Alivio upwards were 42t.
Were they definitely riveted?
I can remember some of the other issues (such as the forging recall and the E-type front mech...) but not that.
Altus was.
This makes me even more glad that the bike it was on (which had the FC-CT90 that was recalled) now has a much more recent Deore triple.
Indeed.
Forgot the e-type mech! That also added to the cost of changing. Altus and acera level
Forgot the e-type mech!
Aye, still not all that clear what made Shimano think a 38t big ring was a smashing idea.
Mind you, I'd probably be going for a 40/28 if I was putting a double on the HoD.
I'm sure there were Alivio chainsets with a 38t big ring too. Alivio was also rivitted at that time. I seem to remember you could only change the rings as a unit. Microdrive was Suntour if I remember correctly...
