My gears 'slip' badly on my HT MTB. The gears slip under load and especially 'popular' gear combination. For example it is worse on the middle ring in the centre of the cassette. I have had a look at the teeth and they look a little worn but I not like shark's teeth yet. Is this consistent with worn gears and how expensive to replace XTR?

If they are not out of adjustment wear is almost certainly the answer. Replace the whole drivetrain probably if you have let it get that worn. You might get away without changing the chainrings.

XTR - £££££££££££

I wouldnt bother with XTR personally, not for driveline parts (gears) - shifters and mechs fine, but I seem to EAT XTR cassettes in no time.
