Is it Hugh's age that's the problem, if he was. 35 would that be better.

The women in his life are all adults with there own mind.
He is a man whose body has wrinkled and withered with time, not his fault, happens to everyone .
I am sure you feel the same at 87 as you do at 35.

It's just every now and then you catch sight of your self in the mirror and think I look bloody old.

So last week we had the girls snogging in the vain vagrant but that was ok cause it was a bit beardy weirdly and arty?!!

You find the two girls from Alpine Outdoors in town snogging comparable to some sort of porny glamour model sexy thing?

I'm going to guess no, but let's not have that get in the way of defending his film.

It's controversial, dontchaknow.

Anyway. This is porny:

POSTED 8 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

Clearly young Danny's video wasn't porny.
The look of the ladies in it were a bit porny. I thought. Anyhow.

POSTED 2 SECONDS AGO # REPORT-POST

I associate women dressed in bikinis frolicking in pools at the Playboy mansion, those wearing bunny girl costumes "a bit porny".

Could be worse, his bike could have been called something porny like "Blowjob". Just as well Danny's not that puerile.

Ha ha! Cove! You need to sponsor DannyMac right now 😆

The Knog calendar pic - I liked it (psst, wanna buy my copy 😉 ).
The Vain Vagrant snog - meh 😕 but the vid was reasonably entertaining.
Not at all sure where I stand as far as Danny's vid is concerned - I watched the first 45 seconds or so - couldn't be arsed with the rest - didn't evoke any 'now I'd love to ride (like) that' sentiments 😉

Just viewed it and I don't know what all the fuss is about. A few very lame bike stunts and some brief shots of some girls in bunny girl costumes. Not porn, not shocking, not very interesting and nothing like as good as Way Back Home and his other videos. Actually I don't know what it's for really.

Folk nowadays must lack life experience if they find that shocking. Tsk tsk.

I agree with Singletrack and their philosophy to only give air time to the sophisticated exploitation of women. I also agree the knuckles draggers and readers of newspapers that don't contain big words should not be catered for here, or in the magazine. This place is for the elite of the mtb world. Wise and sensitive souls come here, not to get aroused by videos with ladies in them, but to show off their superiority, make fun of people who didn't pay attention at school and to argue like little children.

Sha-po singletrack, as they say in well to do circles.

Looks like it was acceptable back in 2011 to leer at scantily clad women in STW...

That would be very true, if anyone at all had said they found it shocking.

But fortunately they didn't.

Looks like it was acceptable back in 2011 to leer at scantily clad women in STW...

They showed the front cover of a calendar featuring "artfully shot pictures of the female riders", lightly took the piss out of it and refused to show the inside.

Hardly leering is it? Do you really think that is comparable?

Jesus wept. Is this thing really still going?

STW really does seem to be getting very Guardian/apologist/offended on behalf of X of late.

Cheer up.

Its a lad doing what his bosses pay him to do, namely ride a bike in an iconic location. You may not like that location, you may not like that he has done it, but its his job and funnily enough, pissing off your boss doesn't help the bills get paid.

How is that any kind of a justification Andy?
He was being paid so we shouldn't criticise it? Singletrack should promote the video regardless of their own view, because that's what Red Bull want?

They could have just ignored it, and promoted something else.

I hear Ed Ox has a new vid out.

We are part of the media. We say stuff. We generally put ignoring stuff down the list where we can. We WERE making a point. And we have succeeded in that. Some people are debating the issues around the video and some are debating about our reasons for speaking out. That's all fine. Whatever side you end up on or otherwise, picking things to say; for you to read, get upset about or behind - that's what we are meant to do. Pleasing everyone and avoiding a good slating is something I personally gave up on a while ago now. Danny was misguided. Using bunny girls was a bit of unsophisticated marketing. They probably new that and are happy to celebrate achieving their aims. Singletrack doesn't really like how they did it. But that's just our opinion and you are free to call us on that and pick holes in our reasoning. But it won't change how we feel about it or about how we spoke up about it.

Well that looks like the final word (I think all others have been used as usual 4x over between the 2 threads) at least everyone now knows that STW don't like it but if anyone missed it they know they can go and find it 🙂

Here are two genuine actual female cyclists who put their point across very well (bless them) in the Evans FB comments:

Rebecca Pritchard: Great to see some men understand how damaging it is, especially to girls, to use women as decoration especially as women's human rights are decreasing for the first time in 100 years. Girls are already inundated with messages about how they're only purpose is to look good and that they are inadequate at this.

Anne Knott: This isn't about the actual content of the video. It's disappointing because it aligns mountain biking with a sector that has historically promoted the exploitation of women in a variety of guises. It further embeds the notion that mtb is a male sport and, as others have pointed out, it alienates potential participants who don't like this move (male and female). I know it was probably just seen as a bit of fun, but it was a serious error of judgement on Danny's part. Danny also needs to remember that he appeals to the younger market and therefore has a responsibility toward them and their parents. All the folk out there whose comments support this: do you have a daughter/sister/mother? Would you rather she was kicking ass on a mountain bike, or flaunting her ass for the pleasure of other men? Right then. Come on Danny, you've got the skills to pay the bills, you don't need this rubbish.

Personally I'm quite happy to align myself with those viewpoints.

If you'd rather be on the Its-PC-Garn-Mad side then take a good look around at your fellow commenters:

No doubt Singletrack have got a bird running their Twitter feed.
..
They're jealous because they didn't get to go to the play boy mansion and go balls deep in all those bunny 's like Danny and the film crew did.
..
Obvs the editor is a lady, or gay, it's just a bit of fun
..
that's why their upset, they might like old man balls instead of nice looking woman.

Well said Graham.

The poor standard of the video (compared to previous Danny vids) just makes it worse - like they have added a plastic toy to a box of bran-flakes.

Anne Knott (in the post a few above) seems so angry she has become confused, Danny MacAskill is best known for being a street trials rider not a mtb rider.
I think her standpoint is absolute rubbish there are many female role models to look up to in the world of mountain biking and there always have been.

I can't understand why you posted that GrahamS

I went out in my Danny MacAskill signature shoes the other night. Ended up in a gentlemans club.

I demand Danny personally refund me any money I may or may not have spent in there

WTF was the swimming pool comment about?! I take it Mark owns STW and is free to have his Ratner moment, either way polarizing a brand's customer base in order to push a personal opinion is foolhardy at best imo.

Not really a Ratner moment, just stating the STW editorial stance on the issue.
So now we know what side of the fence they are on when it comes to bicycles and ladies with big ears. Ooh, did someone say Jessica Rabbit!!

I'm sure that will offend somone on here.

Missed that. Where?

For the umpteenth time, no one is "offended".

It just suits the PC-Garn-Mad crowd to pretend that people are "offended" because it means they get to misrepresent them as overly-sensitive naive prudes, like Victorians fainting at the sight of a sexually provocative table leg.

Now please, stop beating your wife.

Nothing weird about the love betwixt a man and his rabbit.

I even hear of women who have a soft spot for rabbits. It's more rampant than you think.

It's the correct stance for STW to take IMO and it was right for them to point out their position. But i do take issue with the contempt that STW has shown for its users and magazine buyers in its tweet.

Mark just said he's given up on trying to please everyone. Fair enough, but it seems his sense of superiority has become so great that he basically sits on his pedestal picking out plebs he feels are just about worthy of associating with him.

Some of you need to get a life. I've watched the vid. Its not sexist etc, its worse its just not very good. Abit dull really. Possibly Danny did it for the American market?

Stop tripping over yourselves to be offended on someone elses perceived-behalf.

I find his videos and riding very dull. Yes he's got some skills but seems like many of his videos need a gimmick to make them entertaining, which in my opinion has back fired. I'd much rather see his bike skills applied to a trail or other challenging settings, I guess similar to Chris Akrigg's videos. Ive found all his videos since the giant toy one very boring to watch and have never managed to watch them all the way through. The playboy thing doesn't offend me, but I just cant see the point of it.

The irony of all this is that if STW hadn't said anything, we'd now be several pages into a thread discussing the video anyway and saying it's not good enough how STW were just ignoring it and couldn't even do us the courtesy of an official statement.

Can't bloody win.

It gives the un-outraged a chance to get outraged at the lack of outrage by those supposedly outraged on behalf of X*.

Stop tripping over yourselves to be offended

No one is offended, it's about having standards.

Someone may have said this earlier: Didn't "stuff" magazine acknowledge recently that having bikini'd models posing lustily with iPods was outdated?

here we go: link

isn't this kinda the same thing?
