[#585892]

I'm doing a 100mile (10-11laps of grafam water) on saturday... yes I'm aware it 'may' be a little dull. I'm relying on stimulating conversation to make it bareable.

ok to the question: I'm currently on 36:16, with a 170mm crank gives about 59inches of gear.
I've just put on the semi-slicks.

Would you also go up to a 44:16 ratio? It's my only other option.
Can you think of anything else I should do?

Surely you want to stick with what you've got if it's this Saturday. And if you feel like banging out a ton on the old singlespeed your probably the best one to listen to for advice.
You sound like me?

I would - but I've got my legs & lungs not yours
I suppose you could easily change it if it wasn't working, without losing too much time

Depends how flat it is. 44:16 is high.

I did a road century on a 53" gear and will be keeping that ratio (34:18 on 700x42 tyres) when doing it again in September. Unless I try it fixed, when I'll be running 59" (34:16).

Does crank length have an effect on gear inches?

ok using sheldon browns (all hail the god that was sheldon brown) gear calculator a 36:16 is 57.9inches of gear. replacing the 36 with a 42 (a 44 was a mistype) it is 67.6 inches. (26x1.9 tyre)
That's an increase of nearly 17% - bigger than the increase of 32 to 36t.
Hmmmmm
I think I'll stick the 42t ring on and add a few links (the sliding drop outs won't adjust that far).
then the change is just dropping the extra links out & adjusting the tug.

Uplink> do you regard yourself as fit then? ๐Ÿ˜‰
