But Mine got broken following an off at the weekend. Please recommend me a small discrete and effective one please.

PDW from charlie the bikemonger.

Only downside is it dings allong merrily to itself offroad, great at trail centers for gettign slow people out the way, f***ing anoying otherwise. Solved with a bit of plastic hose hove the arm, which kinda makes it useless though!

Makes a pleasant and not too aggressive, ping-ping, which was my main buying criteria.

mine is a 'ring-ring' type rather than 'ding-ding' that says 'i heart my bike' on it - it was a Christmas present from my kids a few years ago

I've got one like GrahamS. Mounted upside down just inside brake lever so nicely out of the way, and I can ping it with my thumb while brake sliding and showering walkers with gravel.

(That last bits not true btw, skids are for pants not for trails)

I have an air zound but sometimes even that doesn't work on those suicidal pedestrians.

Upside down? I'll try that - all the positions I've tried since getting one a few weeks ago were either out of reach or in the way.

GrahamS -
Anyone with a bell like that, in fact. Follow a mate on a climb, watch their pedalling, then gently ting the bell every time their right foot reaches the top of the pedal stroke.

Those Halfords bells are crap. Yeah, they ting, as long as you don't break it putting it on, which I'd say is a 50/50 chance.

On my commuter, I use this simple little bell, love how you can vary the ring from one ting, to a train passing 😉

After reading Bell Review, I got one from Ebay (Search for Raleigh Brass Bell).

It's small, light, effective and can be positioned near to your shifters without getting in the way. Most importantly, it stops the irritating "Where's your bell?" question.

Hmm, does anyone find people actually hear them? I used to persist with the bell thing but in the end it was just to come back at the "you should have a bell" argument, as they were never heard and I'd ususally have to resort to calling out.

Yeah mine seems to do alright, though you always get folk like the woman last night who couldn't tell which direction it was coming from cos she had her hood up, so span around, saw me, squealed and for some reason jumped directly into my path.

It's always a judgement call whether it is safer to ping someone who is oblivious, or just try to pass them swiftly and quietly so as not to startle them. Bit like deer really.

Multi rings works like this...

Ring once - they will look about, apart from where you are?

Ring a 2nd time - they will look round at you, then carry on.

Ring 3rd time - they will step out of the way begrudgingly, without looking at you, sometimes to be heard mumbling something unintelligible 😉
