Wheels are at the wheel builder and he suggested red nipples with black spokes - he really suggested brass nipples but screw that, I want a bit of bling and save a few grams too :p. So I'd like to see how they look before I commit to it! Thanks guys!

Black Tune Prince/Princess, black DT Aerolite, red DT standard aluminium nipples, red Tune AC16/17 skewers, 1200g pair.
Looks good, as above, XT wheelset comes with red nipples.

Why avoid ? I've had red nipples on my single speed wheeels for the last 5 yrs, they only look red if i bother to clean it tho.
They round off easier and I think you can't build as tight with ally nipples. I woould only put them on race wheels myself. No need at all anywhere else.

Fantastic wheelset - heavily battered and still true 🙂 BETD built them up and I'd always go back there if I needed another set.

Alloy nipple seize and so after a couple of years you can't true/re-tension them.
Only if you don't build 'em right Al....
Any nipple can sieze if the threads aren't lubricated when building. 🙂

Sorry, I've built 100's of wheels for a living.
I just bought some new wheels from Superstar and they look lovely. Red hubs, black spokes, red nipples and black rim.
Not had a chance to test them yet though, hopefully they will be as well built as they look!

There's a good reason for it - I'll have you know! They were built up for a lovely little XC bike, but I didn't have enough cash to sort another set for this one. It was supposed to be temporary as I didn't believe they would last with a) my lack of line choice and b) me learning to jump/drop on them.
But they have. Despite numerous bad landings, landings to flat/incline and getting battered over numerous rocks, they are still as true as when I got them. The back rim has two dinks from running low pressure and not picking a line, but otherwise, totally faultless.

Agree on alu nips seizing. Yes brass [b]can [/b]seize, but alu [b]will [/b]seize!

Yep I got a pair of full black Maxxis for tyres as those wheels will remain as they are for emergencies. I just was not sure if red would go with the whole grey/white/black theme of the frame - saddle is going full black as well.

Not including the skewers they're not... I noticed the Yeti had gone to 20.5lbs the other day too!
Weighed it properly at Sherwood last year, was 20.6 inc pedals then (spec as in the photo).
Made some changes since then, freewheel,rear rim, pedals. Even removed the (surprisingly heavy metal) head-tube badge. Got a set of lighter tyres to put on, but probably won't race on them. Don't have my own accurate scales so would like to get a proper measure of it if anyone with a set sees me at a race...
Maybe it's just me but I hate to see people not taking advantage of an open goal

I like my red alu nipples, but they're not on black rims I'm afriad, and they are on their 3rd use!

Building 100s of wheels means nowt. It's the old ones that sieze!
My wheels were built with brass nipples to avoid siezing and guess what? They siezed.
Nipples seize when not correctly lubed. None of the alu nippled wheels I've built have seized, but they are hard to get tight enough without rounding the nipple - needs a good quality spokey - as you can see in my above wheels they were last done with a cheapy and they've lost their corners 🙁
Given the winter we have been having won't your red nipples turn blue when you get them outside anyway?

LOL I actually thought it was a bit of a funky weird looking cool combo. Was unintentional anyway, tyred came from a different bike! Beyond the point now as the Maxxis are all black with red/white fonts.

Yes, on my scales, and I remember you taking off your dustcaps in an effort to get it lighter than Dougal's Koncept! I'll bring them again this year, you can see if it's got any lighter...
I'm not really sure what the argument is here, you can lube/spoke freeze a wheel to reduce the risk of nipples seizing, but if you don't touch a wheel with alu nips for a couple of years, then try and tweak it, you'll have problems!
njee20 the guy that is building them for me suggested brass ones but ended up choosing alloy just cause I figured it was one of the cheapest ways to save a big of weight 🙂 he reckons I'd be saving a cool 50gr per wheel I thought that sounded a bit optimistic, surely you couldn't be saving 100gr a set from just the nipples?
In any case I did away with revolutions, too many people saying they are too flexy and using Sapims in the end.
