[Closed] Shortening Lock-on grips - anyone done it?

[#9717543]

The grips on my daughter bike are falling apart so decided that she needed some new ones.

I've ordered a pair of Superstar lock-on's with 2 rings.

This'll be OK on the LHS, but the RHS has a grip shift. Has anyone successfully shortened a lock on grip?

I had an idea of just cutting one end off and using a single lock ring - she's only 7 so shouldn't be able to twist it.

Then I thought about taking the rubber grip off the plastic cartridge and and cutting the middle section out of the plastic cartridge, trimming the rubber grip and putting back together with 2 lock rings.

I know I could have got the correct (pricey...) short grips but where's the fun in that 😀

Never done it but Your idea of cutting a section out of the middle is what i'd do, if you think you can get a decent join and / or she tends to wear gloves.

If not, no outer lockring might be the way to go.

Was going to use my steerer cutter guide to get the joint level. Either that or pipe cutters.

I was going to take off the outer cover and trim from one end so that it's continuous when I put it back on so no join.

I've used SS grips with the outer ring tabs cut off with no bother in the past.

I just cut the ends off them on my sons bike and butted the lock ring up against the cut edge. I couldn’t get them to spin by twisting and you can’t tell to look at them.
I don’t think I would want a join in the middle as it may pinch skin if they ever moved.

Yep I've done it to use with a Rohloff shifter.
Just cut it with a hacksaw and use the outer clamp only.
ODI actually do a grip specifically for gripshifts but having a locking ring in the middle of the grip isn't very comfy...

Hadn't thought of that - will go with one ring on the outside then I think.

I've just done that today.

Used steerer cutter.

Have not yet completed the bike, but I don't expect any problem.

Yup - done this on my bikes. Simply cut with a hacksaw

I did precisely what you describe, my daughter has a half-pipe grip shifter on the RH side, so only needed another 30mm or so of grip, roughly chopped it off with a hacksaw then finished off with a dremel, Single lockring at the end of the bar...
