[Closed] Shock upgrade - Boost Valve or Custom Tune/Shims?

[#3288024]

I'm looking to upgrade the Fox RP2 on my bike to improve its mid-stroke support, and if at all possible, improve the small bump sensitivity and grip of the rear suspension.

I've done loads of research and come up with two options - I'm guessing they'll give similar results, but just wondered if anyone has experience of these upgrades - if you do, could you let me know please?

First option is to retro fit Fox's 'boost valve', which converts the shock to exactly the same spec as those used on the more expensive versions of my bike (which have btter rear suspension characteristics than my bike).

The second option is to reduce the internal volume of the air can (spacers or smaller can) and have a custom shim stack fitted.

I'd made my mind up to go with the latter, based on advise of guys at TF Tuned, who reckon that Fox's boost valve stiffles small bump sensitivity. Perhaps I'm being too sceptical, but I'd wondered if this is because they sell PUSH tuning? Does anyone have any views on boost valved shocks being more harsh than non-BV shocks?

I thought the boost valve RP23's (with there larger can) increased mid-stroke wallow compared to the the pre-boost valve models. This seemed to be the case when orange changed the five from non- boost valve (2009) to boost valve in 2010.

2011 Lapierre Zesty 514. For background info., the 2010 models came with boost valved XV RP2's. The BV was dropped on the 2011 models (allegedly to hold price of bike the same as previous year), but shock volume and tune remained the same as previous year.

As I ride on rocky/loose terrain a fair bit, I wouldn't really like to loose any more of the small bump sensitivity & grip of the rear suspension - hence the question regarding boost valved shocks.

p.s. when i mentioned in my OP that BV shocks on higher end Zestys have better characteristics than the shock on my bike - I meant in regard to mid to end stroke control.

BOS Vipr or Fox RP23 with kashima coat are the best options for upgrade.

ive had success 'pushing' 2 full sus bikes. my ibis especially it removed the high speed spiking when you hit rough stuff fast.
Deffo recommend tf and PUSH ๐Ÿ™‚
(one standard float on my titus and an rp23 on the ibis)
