Tonight my XT derailleur failed ๐Ÿ™
My chain jammed between cassette & wheel, all these components OK ! What i did notice was chain hanging low & checked derailleur to find the spring load on the cage is not springing, suspect the spring snapped or mechanism jammed.
So decision time, can it be fixed or just buy new ? Where do i find model number ? What is the difference between all models as in xt & xt shadow 771 & 772 are they interchangeable, The derailleur came from & 2010 giant anthem X3 & has had a busy life ! thanks for all advice & opinions ๐Ÿ™‚

It's worth having a look at the derailleur to check if you can fix it. There's a spring in the joint between the parallelogram bit and the cage. Sometimes if forced the spring can unclip itself from its housing, and you *might* be able to clip it back together. I'd be very surprised though.

Is it 9 or 10 speed? That's the crucial question - as long as it's Shimano and the same number of gears then there's no problem, they're all broadly compatible.

If you haven't changed any major components on that bike from new, then it's 9 speed XT, and you'll want a long cage version ( http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20700). The standard one that came on the Anthem is a Shadow (low profile) version - I can't really think of a good reason to go for the non-shadow one. Some people say Shadow isn't as reliable, I disagree with this completely.

M770 - "Rapid Rise" shifts the 'wrong' way. I hate these.
M771 - Normal, non-shadow
M772 - Shadow. The one you want.

Lastly before you throw the old one away, salvage the jockey wheels. You'll thank me one day.

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago..tried reseating the spring and bolting it all back together..
There's a small Allen key on the main body that allows you to remove the lower mech arm.
Seemed fine at first but the second ride on it it did the same again only this time it shredded the plastic housing trim and bent the spring.
No replacement parts from Madison till the end of march so put a shout out on here and someone was good enough to send me a slightly damaged one to use to salvage spares..

Gents,

thanks for the advise & help. I stripped down the derailleur & think the P spring has stretched so in the process of oredering & spare. I have got hold of a spare derailleur till i fix mine to, so happy days hopefully !

thanks

Was able to transplant the spring and plastic seal and all seems fine.
Fingers crossed it stays that way!
