Always used the SH51's and never really had a problem.
However, now I'm riding more in traffic and urban stuff and my knees are kaput, wondering if the multi release ones are worth a shot.
Won't be used off road.
Any thoughts?
Don't fancy the thought of random unclipping.....
You're about to get two sets of quite polarised views.
I quite like em. I occasionally have them randomly unclip if I've done something odd. but I'm ok with that as the benefit of being able to hop out should the unexpected happen is worth it to me.
Other people absolutely hate them 🙂
They are all I use and I really like them. I have dodgy knees so the ability to twist up and out helps a lot.
Never really had a problem with random unclipping.
I gave up on them pretty quickly due to random unclipping when cornering and bunny hopping, but that was all offroad, and in fairness I would occasionally unclip from my Time ATACs when cornering on the CX bike...
Cheers, I think I'll stick with the SH51's.
Better the devil you know and all that.....🙂
After years of SH51 use, I accidentally bought a set of SH56's. Unclipping when you don't expect to isn't pleasant.
Yeah, I figured my muscle memory will be tuned into the SH51s.
Just remembered I DID have a pair of 56s in the spares box but threw them out ages ago.....must have been a reason for it. 🙂
I bought a pair of SH51s a while back off ebay (BNIB) and stuck them on my shoes for mountain biking. I had various problems with unpredicted release on one side that I initially put down to a worn pedal but closer inspection showed one was actually an SH56. So I can confirm that they're shit for mountain biking but OK for road / touring unless you 'dig deep'. Not sure if you'd have them on a tighter setting than SH51 but for a tenner it's worth it for the potential of happy knees and more assured traffic light track stands.
They are great for MTB BUT, you do need to increase tension on the pedals slightly, compared to what you would have on SH51's. I've ran them for years and wouldn't use sh51's now.
I prefer the multi release cleats, but I switched from Crank Brothers which is multi-multi release. I still much prefer the clip in action of Crank Brothers too.
Never had any unexpected unclipping with Shimano.
