I've just been helping a mate choose some wheels to upgrade an old nag of a bike he's got.

It looks like he's plumped for a set of Shimano MT66 (apparently the SLX "Race" level variant) and I have to say I'm slightly tempted to get a set for my own HT and move my aging Mavic Crosslands on to my SS...

I'm just wondering the MT66s will fair with "enthusiastic trail use" i.e. the odd 2-3 foot drop, blatting through rocks and general misstreatment...

Anyone used em a bit meaner?

...Oh and I do know they're cup & cone, and I have no problem with that fact (before it's pointed out)...

I got a pair of the previous MT65s to replace the OEM AlexRims things on a Rockhopper, because they were the cheapest proper tubeless wheelset I could find.

I don't think I'm hard on wheels (the OEM ones lasted for ages), very rarely drop off stuff and am fairly light, but I do ride through a lot of rocks. They're still round.

I believe that the MT66s use pretty much the same rim - if so then it's the same as on the XT versions (only the hubs are lighter) and they have a reputation for being pretty tough. I could be wrong and your mate might break them first ride though. If he's a big lad, or has a history of breaking spokes/wheels/bikes/bones then I'm sure something handbuilt would be better (and easier to fix).

I bought these last week for £59.99 and they seem pretty decent for the money . They have Shimano hubs and seem pretty bombproof.

I had a set of the old xt ones and they were bomb proof. Don't use them now because the hubs are screwed. Did you know they were cup and co........

MT66 aren't a proper tubeless rim like XT, they are a normal rim with a tubeless strip.
