Shimano MT410 Rear Hub Play

I was cleaning my bike after it's first ride and noticed there's a good few mm of side to side play in the rear hub. Shifting is also quite janky in the higher gears, which I wouldn't expect for a few more rides once the cables stretch (plus that would have been tested in the PDI by the shop).

The rear axle is torqued to spec and the bike has only done 20 miles so I doubt it's the bearings (as suggested by Google).

I've always used Hope or Mavic hubs/wheelsets in the past so unfamiliar with Shimano hubs.

Any ideas?

The MT410 used a half threaded axle on the rear hub.ย
Its a bit of a weird design, but can some loose pretty easily (Especially from new and not checked)

It looks like thisย
<img src=" removed link " />

Pull off the drive said end cap, and use a 3mm allen key in the hole
Then a 17mm cone spanner on none driveside, and nip it upย

Should be goodย

3mm allen key through the yellow marked hole, then tighten the red circled end cap?

Also, is it worth popping a bit of Loctite 243 on the NDS end cap to stop it loosening again in the future?

Yeah, it won't let me do photos for some reason 😂

Thats the axle spares kit, so you can see the bitsย

Brilliant, thanks! That confirms the question in my reply.

I'll give it a go later this evening.

Yep! Thats all itย

It should have some locktite on it, but it might have dried upย
No harm popping a bit more on

Tightening everything solved it for precisely one ride, and I've had to redo it after every ride since 😫ย

Did you put more locktite on it?

No 😆

I thought I had some 243 threadlock but only have 638 retaining compound, so have just been tightening it. I'll get some ordered.

Annoying design though. I've never had to baby Mavic, Hope or even cheap Bontrager hubs like this.

Found my Loctite 243 so have cleaned the threads and applied it. Fingers crossed it does the trick.

There actually were no visible signs of any factory applied Loctite on the axle threads.
