Anyone know the release date of shimano IG and HG? I'm sure IG was late 90's but can anyone confirm? Thanks.

Well 9 speed stuff was all HG and that came out in 99, so IG was earlier than that.

IG was 1995 - I remember buying cassette/mech/chain to replace the DX stuff on my first mtb. HG was certainly in place in 91 when the DX kit was produced and was 7 speed. Basically IG was intended to replace HG IIRC as it supposedly shifted more consistently up and down the cassette but in use it wasn't as good I reckon - the better shifting to harder gears compromised the shifts to easier gears. As such, IG was just a blip really and HG started before and continued after. IG was only released on lower groupsets (like STX-RC)

The IG stuff I had was 7 speed.

Wasn't IG the lower end stuff up to STX RC?, HG continued with Deore based stuff upwards?
EDIT too slow. At least I was right though!

HG - hyperglide, aided down-shifting, 1st year of production 1989 IIRC.

IG - interglide, mid-late 90s. Meant to aid up-shifting also, chains more flexible.

You can use any HG component on IG and vice versa.

I wasn't claiming a win, just using it to back up my own recollections.
From Sheldon Brown

I.G. (Interactive Glide)
Some Shimano 7- and 8-speed cassettes carried the Hyperglide principle even farther, by adding ramps and contouring to both sides of the sprockets. To do this while maintaining the full thickness of the teeth, the designers had to make the sprockets thicker. Since the sprockets are thicker, the spacers must be thinner to maintain the correct spacing. Also, since the sprockets are thicker, Shimano says you shouldn't use H.G. chains on I.G. cassettes. SRAM chains are compatible with both types.

Shimano says that you shouldn't mix I.G. and non-I.G. sprockets, but if you use one I.G. spacer per I.G. sprocket, you should be all right. Some experimentation may be required for best results with a mixed setup.

Aye well google throws up 4,780,000 results for interactive glide and only 20,900 for inter glide so I'll eat FAIL on this one.

As im feeling magnanimous, you were almost there al, obviously interglide was just what some people had abbreviated from InteractiveGlide.

If a site can't even get the meaning of acronym correct, I wouldn't trust it with anything more complicated!
