Here's another one for the resident techno-boffins (thanks for all the advice on bottom bracket and Magura issues from my previous posts).

Another piece of unloved old-school technology I'm clinging to is my Shimano Flightdeck computer. Don't ask me why since I now have GPS, but there it is.

My question is this: mine is the old version with the wired fitting kit, and I've just bust one of the shifter sensors so have ordered a new fitting kit, but this time it's wireless.

Will this be compatible with my existing head unit, or would I need a wireless-compatible head unit as well?

Yes it will be compatible, the only thing that's not reverse compatible is the 9 speed units can't display 10 speed.

Flight Deck's making a come back for 2009 with Dura Ace 7900, although they were a faff to fit I think they're a neat bit of kit.

There are currently 2 wireless kits, one for 9 and one for ten speed. AFAIK you cannot use the 10 speed kit on 9 speed levers and vice versa. If you are running 9 speed levers you need SM6501 and 10 speed needs SMSC70.

Just checked the tech docs and the plate that attaches to the lever is different between the fitting kits.

Aye, but the head units are interchangeable, as long as you've got the fitting kit to suit the levers.
