I am thinking of replacing my Ultegra BB as I am getting some noise from that area and have eliminating all the other obvious sources. Being out of work for close to a year now I'm on a budget. Does anyone know if there is a problem in using a Tiagra 4500 set? I can get these for £12.99 while 105/Ultegra/Dura Ace are all £20+. I know that long term buying the best I can afford is desirable, I just don't have the cash. If I did I'd be buying a Hope set. I've even asked Goldtec about replacing the bearings in the cups but that is £30. I may well do that with the old cups when I have saved up some money/sold something on eBay. I just need something as soon as.
I have looked at Shimano tech sheets but there is no dimensional info on there. In fact I can't find a sheet for Tiagra 4500, the only BB info is for square taper and Otalink BBs. There is only info about the thread type used on the 68mm and 70mm bottom bracket shells.
Ta for any advise.
Parkers will do you a Ultegra/6600 for £16.95 - you'd have to make up the order to £20 for free postage mind. Can't definitely say the 4500 BB will be OK, but can't see why not.
Others will along shortly to nod sagely or flame-away......
nods sagely...
I've used a Tiagra one on my CX bike and it's lasted a couple of years before getting a bit rough (though it still worked). I replaced it with another Tiagra as I reckon a couple of years is reasonable when run through mud/etc for that period of time.
Sounds good guys thank you. Will get the order in as soon as my next benefit arrives.
I asked a similar question recently and the good folks here pointed me at BETD for Enduro replacement bearings.
Quick turnaround, and bearings were fitted for free...
For that BETD replacement service - is it £20 PER CUP or £20 PER PAIR?? It's not immediately clear?
Irrespective, it's £13 for the tiagra BB at wiggle which is way cheaper and by the sounds of it the OP wants it cheap.
Yeah, sorry, I was kind drifting off-topic into my own problems asking about the BETD upgrade 😉 As Clubber says, can't see you'll do better than £13 from Wiggle with free postage.
...was £20 per pair, £25 inc. postage iirc, plus a little more to post your old cups to them.
Dangerboy - ta.
They replied to me and told me it was £30 for the bearing replacement, both cups. That was taking the cups in to the shop. I'd happily do that if I had the cash. I know the people a little and have the advantage of living a 5 minute bike ride from the shop. I just don't have the money at the moment and the noise is driving me (and the guys I ride with) to despair so want it done ASAP. Once the cups are out I will put some money aside and get the new bearings fitted at BETD. Can then have a set waiting for the Tiagras to pack up then swap over and do the same with them.
If BETD do you what want I recommend them. Did me a spoke replacement for almost a third of another Large LBS and took 24hrs instead of a week.
