Has anyone bought one?
Pretty sure my bearings are shot. Looks like it will be upwards of £200 + post both ways to have them changed.
Ali motor can be had for £245 delivered.
Some of the reviews say that the wheel size is set to 37” and needs software / licence to change it.
Can anyone shed any light on the process please and if it’s DIYable.

OEM settings can only be made by Madison in order to ensure that every motor is set appropriately for the bike it’s fitted to in order to satisfy UK speed regulations. Whether they’d do that on a motor bought from AliExpress, I don’t know.
Spend about the same to keep known item in use and working, or buy an unknown unit and add to landfill (possibly twice)?
I would be going with the first option personally.
The Ali Express motor will have customs tax and fees etc.. upon arrival so will cost more than £245, if it becomes faulty and they do actually offer warranty then returning it to China will be a ball ache
Just get your existing motor overhauled, had mine done recently by Performance Bearings, new bearings fitted, full health check, upgraded sealing and re greased which cost £285 including return postage, thought that was pretty reasonable considering the motor was 7 years old and had never been touched
Id doubt that anyone on here has ordered a motor from China, try on EMTB forums as you will have more chance on there of finding someone who has tried importing a motor
Didn't know the Shimano motor was 3rd party repairable? My 3 year old EP8 started grumbling, I went to Sterland cycles in Bristol they are a Shimano service centre, they sent it back to Madison they found something? warrantable I ended up with a new motor FOC with a 2 year warranty 👍

Interesting that they warrantied it after that long, thought it was only 2 years on the motor. Mine’s 3.5yrs old so worth an ask I guess.

Seen it said before that Shimano are pretty good at sorting you out beyond the warranty with either free or heavily discounted replacements.
I'm not saying go for it, but there's a Shimano STEPS group on FB and quite a few people have bought and successfully fitted a motor from AliExpress.
You can reprogram it yourself with a PC and Shimano SM-PCE02 interface, but that's another £120 unless you can find someone local or a shop who has one. EMax or STunlocker might also work.

PCE02 doesn’t allow OEM changes. Madison tech are the only people who can do that.
@phil5556 not officially post warranty I know , it was a pleasant surprise for me . Madison said the grumbling was normal wear they weren't concerned about but they took a further look inside the motor and found something that concerned them 🤔

No mine is a Brose and was repaired by Performance Bearings who dont touch Shimano motors
