having found some looooverly braided hoses for a fiver online.
and made my way to the LBS to get some olives and compression fittings.
and installed said compression fittings, triming the hoses to perfection
bleeding the brakes, i find that fluid is pissing out of the lever.

C0CK

turns out that the compression olive wasnt on straight :$ and has therefore two big holes in each side where it has ovalised.

ignoring the fact that putting new compression olives on, is going to make the hoses now a smidgen on the tight side (not tight, but not perfect)
how do you avoid this happening?
has anyone else had this problem?
i think i need to seat the olive slightly better??

GAH why are LBSs shut on sundays!!! gonna have to wait 24 hours before i can play now!!!
:,(

are you using the nylon blocks to crush the olive? usually when you buy shimano brakes you get the two yellow blocks to crush the olive properly

ummmmm....
noooo

Its an XT brake, i got no parts with it when i got it last year, and the hoses came with no parts.

as far as i know the olive is crushed by torquing it up into the lever itself?
i was under the impression the nylons were to hold the hose while installing the barb, and possibly also conveniently sized as piston blocks??

these you mean?

Olly, always buy 2 more than you need with cheap stuff like this, it guarantees against a visit from Mr Cockup. Samways had them in for £1 last time i bought some but given the latest shimano price rises they are probably about £38.76 now.

The yellow blocks are to clamp the hose in whilst you push the pin thing into the hose but you don't really need them, not to squash the olive, this is done by tightening the hose nut up into the brake lever. There is another different shaped piece of plastic for going in between the pistons when you bleed them which is a similar shape to the pads with a hole in it for the pin.

It may have been hope olives I used them on then, they have to be clamped onto the hose, thought of the top of my head that shimano ones were the same.

Try UK Bikestore for spares like that as they always have shimano spares in.

Hope ones are different to Shimano, what make hoses are they? The olive should be a snug fit on the hose, not loose enough to be misaligned, and should clamp on the braid itself, not on the plastic coating as it can slip(like it used to on original Hope braided hoses).

coatsey.
i think you are right, the olive is a little on the baggy side, allowing it to skew over.
i think the reason they were cheap, is they are old stock.
i also think, 4 olives and barbs later (being charged at a difference price every time) its getting chalked down to a slightly expensive lesson.
good job i was careful takin the old hoses off, rather than chopping them off.
anyone want some old style shimano hose with a fitting on one end only?
x
