the female thread in the caliper that takes the little rod that retains the pads, had a nearly stripped thread when i bought the brakes (wish i'd bought new slx instead!) and the other day it just popped out while riding. gone for good.
have looked at helicoils but not much metal around the hole so drilling out for tap could be dicey. considering a smooth rod like hope ones on my mono minis. would still mean some drilling out tho.
maybe i can just replace half the caliper. any going for spares repairs?
anyone had this problem and solved it?
yes i'm just being tight and trying to avoid buying a new caliper, take it i could bung a deore one on if i did tho?
thanks
jimmer
Just use a split pin instead like on SLX brakes
Just use the split pin that comes with the OEM pads? I should have a spare one knocking around somewhere if you want one?
oh yeh? didn't know that
got some probly the right size too come to think of it. need to drill both holes out tho
You shouldn't need to drill anything out at all.
aye, but the hole on the threaded side is bigger than the other side, so to get a snug fit for the split pin i'd want to drill both to the same size?
no?
although having done a bit more image searching, it seems the pad axle should've had a snap ring on the other side, which it didn't. might be enough with w bit of loctite to keep things snug.
anyway i'll try a split pin. thanks all
split pin doesn't need to be snug, bending it apart when in place is enough to keep it there
As others have said - split pin, and no need to drill anything. The SLX calliper has the thread but uses a split pin (Shimano use the same parts for the XT and SLX calliper just paint them a different colour and use a pad axle for the XT and a split pin for the SLX).
I use split pins in my XTR brakes, no drilling.
thanks everyone
