Thinking of trying one of these on my commuter with a 1 X 9 settup and was wondering if anybody has one? My alternative is to buy another crank and fit a singlespeed chainring to it. Any input would be very appreciated.

I have one on my Roadrat with 8sp Alfine hub. Not had owt go wrong, HT2 BB OK, seems stiff enough. Its a shiny crank.

Have one on my airnimal and love it. Changing gear downhill on the brakes or when stationary soon becomes second nature. Just be careful when changing the wheel as it's an order of magnitude more pain than traditional hub gear linkages.

I was actually hoping it would work with a normal cassette?

I think djaustin is just commenting on the hub, rather than the chainset. Had some on bikes that have gone through the shop I used to work at. They seem fine, just pricier for what you actually get!

I've got one on my SS Roadrat, not much to say about it really- it certainly doesn't seem lacking in any way? Oh, and it has a nice trouser protector on it.

I stuck one on my road rat a few weeks back. Seems nice. Can't think of anything negative to say about it.

Its exactly as it looks ... works well, not had any issues. Cant see a obvious problem with it for a 1x9 setup

Got one on a HT that I'm planning to ride through the winter (off road) and it's been built with a Mavic DH rim, 36 spokes - so very burly. Find the Alfine heavy and cumbersome to get up to speed, the gearing is very W......I......D.......E, but apart that all is good. Ask me again at the end of the winter mudfest and I'll tell you how much cash I've saved on chains, cassettes, crank sets, chain rings, front mechs etc 🙂

I am pleased people like Alfine hubs so much they will tell you about them on a chainset query.
