Please could somebody explain which would be better for a 1*10 drive train, an sgs mech or gs mech.
looking at 32 front 36 rear.
what are the advantages/ disadvantages of both?
I was wanting the sgs in case/ when I want to convert to a triple, but will it have an adverse effect on my 1* ?
Thanks in advance
Sam
Either or for 1x as long as the range on the cassette is fine. Top minus bottom sprocket size. Buy mech accordingly. Obviously a super short won't work with 36
I'm not sure anyone is converting to a triple these days.... I'd consider the double option 39/26 for your max range. The shorter the cage the better for having less chain flopping round.

got a couple of barely used XT GS mechs if you want a cheap one? ๐
I'll go against the general concensus, and say an SGS is far better suited to a wide ratio cassette/single ring as it can cope far better with the differences in chain slack (especially factoring in full sus chain growth). I've had to set up some pretty appalling single ring GS set-ups recently, having to resort to B-tension adjustment to take up slack instead of it's intended use of positioning the jockey in relation to the cassette.A short cage is better suited to a triple (as long as you aren't a gear numpty), as you generally use a large ring/small sprocket or vice versa, thus controlling the amount of slack automatically.
Thanks.
I'll be putting it on a Cove Hustler frame that has quite a large amount of chain growth so I think I'm going to go with an sgs,
Any more opinions out there?
Will I have a problem dropping chains with the sgs in a 1* set up?
