The dust seals at the top of the lower leg that is. Cost about £15 just for 2 poxy bits of foam and rubber. Do I need to replace them each year I service? Will my stanchions die if I don't?

If the rubber is in sound condition with no cracks or signs of perishing then just leave them in place and give them a good clean and a thin smear of grease in the lip. Pull the foam rings out and give them a clean in soapy water.
Sure it'd be nice to put in fresh seals but its by no means essential.
