[Closed] Servicing a Retro ELO Lefty

Guys, I have an old ELO Lefty which needs some attention.

Firstly it leaks oil out of the bottom, apparently the schraeder valve, and the ELO mechanism will not engage.

I have lifted the rubber boot and the bottom of the shims don't look to be in a great condition either.

However, I can't seem to disassemble it, and can't find any instructions on the web to do so.

There are some tamper-proof torq bolts in the ELO mechanism, but nothing further obvious.

If new seals etc will be expensive I'll probably just chuck it away, but I'd like to get it going properly again.

Any suggestions/pointers gratefully received.

Cheers, Rich

The Cannondale MTBR forums are a good place to start to look for info, also some stuff on "go lefty" if it's still up.

For parts try http://www.cannondale-parts.de/en_US though there P&P ain't cheap (when last I looked)

When you say 'expensive' what's your upper limit? Costs about £100 for a service, which included new bearing cages and seals.

Even if it's knackered, I'd put it on the 'Bay rather than throwing it, as it may be worth someone repairing it.

It's a slightly tricky situation actually, I bought the ELO 2nd hand from the classifieds here, built it up onto a Sanderson and rode it about twice without issue.

A friend in India then wanted to buy the bike, which I agreed to.

Since then he has knackered both cranks as they needed tightening but he didn't know that was why they were creaking. The lefty has also started dripping oil from the bottom, and the ELO mechanism has stopped fully engaging 🙄

Feeling bad, I canibalised another of my bikes and gave him a virtually unused pair of ISIS cranks and brand new BB, and also put a set of Marzocchi Marathon forks on, with the intention of hopefully sorting the lefty without major expense.

If it was my bike and I was intending to keep it for a while, I wouldn't hesitate spending what was necessary to get it working properly, however I'm doing this as I feel guilty 🙁

I might see if he will go halves on the ~ £160 for the fix.

The £160 was a ball-park figure from Thumprint Tuning for telescope service, new damper seals etc including return carriage

Cheers, Rich
